GTX 780 Idle Temp Of 55-69C Depending on how hot room is

I'm using EVGA's GTX 780 and at this very second the temperature is reading 57C and seems to be going up. I'm using the latest version of HWMonitor to monitor the temperature. Yesterday the idle temperature went all the way up to 69C. Which is really strange because when I first got the card it didn't even exceed 30C idle. Took the card off my computer cleaned it and same temperatures... It's strange because when I run MSI Afterburner and try to purposely get the GPU really hot, it doesn't exceed 83C. Running 1920 x 1080 maxed it gets to 79-81C then drops down to 80 then 79 then back to 80C again. And when it gets to weaker parts of the test it goes down to 77. So I closed the test when it got really hot and opened the test again and kept doing that to see how hot I can get it and the hottest I can get it was 83C which mean this card is actually performing at a normal temperature under load. 80-85C is considered acceptable under high load If I'm correct but usually stays at an optimum performance level of 80C while gaming. So under load the card seems to be reading normal temps but while idle scratch 57C it's now @ 58C and probably won't stop until it it's around 59C considering my room temperature is 72F. When my room temperature is 77C the card gets to 69C idle.

What is wrong with my card? I've left my computer on for probably 2 months straight but I haven't been playing any huge games even. Why is it running so hot?

Also, another very weird thing... I thought maybe it was the software driver is out to date. So I installed the newest version of Nvidia Driver (Beta) and the card dropped from 69C to 38C until the install was completed and I restarted my computer, back to 59C again.

What????
This problem just occured 1 day ago out of the blue I am constantly monitoring system temps. What's up?

I'll try a system reformat later but I don't think it'll do anything. I think it might be time for an RMA. This card is def not worth $500.

So what do you think? RMA?
Also, will my warranty expire if I RMA the card? When they fix it / send me a new one will the 3 year warranty it comes with be expired? Or will I be able to RMA it as many times as I want for 3 years. This is bullshit. I hope they fix this anytime it does this. I paid 520$ for this thing.

Solution

Nice! No, it should not, it will boost automatically!
That temperature is pretty normal, the card can go up to 105C but it will never reach that temperature, the maximum they go up is 83C and stay there while gaming, you got nothing to worry about, your card is running cool. I have a 780ti and it runs at 57C on idle as well, and max is 83C it keeps that temperature. Try it yourself while playing a game and you will see that it wont go above 83C.

if your gpu is idle at around 60C and your room temp is around 77F (25C), then something isn't quite right

your early idle temps of around 30C is what I would expect at idle with your room temps.

either something is effecting airflow in your case, some kind of malware or program is using your GPU, or worst case (but unlikely given at load temps are normal) the card has developed a problem

what is your fan setup like in your case? are they all working ok?
do a full malware scan, see if anything is found
launch in safemode and/or selective startup with only windows programs enabled - see what temps you get

I thought the same thing. Maybe some type of program is using my GPU. I have basically 5 fans in my case. I have a Corsair H80i that has 2 fans on the back of the case and inside of the case blowing air into the case. I have 1 fan on the side of the case. And I have 2 fans on the front of the case cooling down the HDD

Watch your GPU usage while idling. You can view this in Precision X. You should be viewing fan speed in Precision X as well, because it will give you the actual % and not a RPM number, which probably isn't completely accurate.

You can create a custom fan profile in Precision X as well.

Is this a reference style card? If so, it's somewhat normal because they run hotter, but exhaust the air out the rear so the other components don't heat up.

Just opened the case and gently touched the fan. Yes, it's spinning. Fan seems to be working just fine.

that's my exact card. With the Titan looks no ACX cooler. Still, it used to run 30C idle..
I will download the program and check the usage while idle now..
Edit: according to EVGA Precision X 0.0% GPU Usage

2 days ago it ran at 40-50C which I thought was weird
Yesterday I noticed it got up to 69C

It actually seems to be getting worse

How long have you had the card? I'd suggest that you'll need to apply new thermal paste. Or just RMA it and hopefully request that you can get an ACX version instead and you'll pay the difference? Not sure if that's possible, but I'm sure a quick call to EVGA will sort things out.

I can't remember exactly what my fan speed is at idle, since I'm at work and can't check, but it does seem like 32% is a little low... especially for 57C. Click the fan curve button and set up a more aggressive fan profile.

If i remember correctly, I believe my fan speed at idle is around 45%.

Maybe like 4 months I had it

If you are worried get new drivers, or roll back, perform a clean install, but before try changing your system performance to adaptive in the Nvidia Control Panel. Restart, this should fix your problem.

This Precision X messed up a lot trying to setup a custom curve. It's difficult to use and I don't like it. These settings are gone when you reformat your computer right?
I'm going to reformat my PC and install the drivers all over again. If it does the same thing do you think I should just return it?
Edit: Power Mangement mode is already on adaptive. I clicked restore to defaults and it's still on adaptive

Did you change your Power Management mode to Adaptive in the Nvidia Control Panel? It worked for me.

Restarted the PC. I was in Adaptive mode all along 53C and rising
edited: now bouncing to 55-56C like before
