I would like help in picking a gpu for my gaming rig. I liked the gtx 780 for a while but now the 900 series is out and everyone is like get the gtx 970 instead. According to what ive checked, the difference between the 2 gpus is quite small. However, on amazon the gtx 780 EVGA acx cooler superclocked edition costs 365$ (about 150$ cheaper than it was before the release of the 900 series) where as the 970 is something aroun 415$. Which one should i get? The 780 still has better performance and is cheaper so why would i get a 970?

No .... while based upon the same GPU, they are not the same cards. For one the 770 used DDR5 when the 680 did not. It's memory bandwidth is also different (192 GB/s vs 224 GB/s) , the 770 consumed more power (230 versus 170 watts)...and they did not perform exactly the same....the 770 was about 5% faster.

Each generation, whether a tick or a tock, is set up that the 2nd tier card in the new generation slightly outperforms the 1st tier from the previous one.... this has less to do with hardware than marketing I think and the reason why many pundits speculateded that nvidia relabeled their whole line when their planned 670 was deemed to be faster than AMD's 1st tier card ... at least this was the conclusion drawn by many reviewers...

The 970 uses less power, outputs less heat, and has Nvidias new technologies, such as DSR and MFAA, but with that price difference i would get the 780, as the advantages of the 970 arent important enough to warrant the extra price for ME, if you care about DSR (Super sampling which can be done on the 780) and MFAA (a more efficient MSAA) then the 970 might be worth it, but they arent super important updates.

The 970 is about 5% slower than a 780ti.

But it has higher overclocking potential. How much are 780ti's in your country?

The 780 is now obsolete.

The 680 became the new and improved 770 and now the 970 is the new and improved equivalent of the 780.

It wouldn't matter much one way or the other....780 is about 10 - 11 % faster.... but more importantly, it's quieter, uses less power, requires smaller PSU, scales better in SLI and overclocks better. The 970 is a better investment... while you can get a real sweet deal this time of year buying a leftover 2014 model rather than a 2105, just remember when you go to sell that card, it's worth a helluva lot less. Unless ya get a strikingly good deal, Id take the 970.

the 780 is far from obsolete

the 680 and 770 are the exact same graphics card, except any cooler changes or rearrangements done to their pcbs... otherwise they perform exactly same. the 780 and 970 are not only different chips, but completely different architectures.

but i agree, unless you can find a 780 for about $300 which i have seen, just get the 970 for $330.

This "theory" was then deemed confirmed by those same pundits when after a long build up the R9s were announced and within a week nVidia was getting ready to ship the 780 Ti. And while nVidia hasn't confirmed or denied the suggestion, it's the most logical explanation for them being able to ramp up production of a supposedly "new" card in such a short time. I think everyone now pretty much accepts that there is another 980-X sitting waiting for something to challenge the current 970/980.

The same was true of the 670 /580 .... 570 / 480 ... and I imagine the 1070 / 980 :)
