My current build is as follows:

Intel I7 4771 3.5/3.9
MSI G series Z87-G45
Corsair Vengence 16 GB @1600 Mhz
2x120 GB SSD
2x2 TB HDD
2X Asus 27" IPS

I'm upgrading from an AMD 7970 and am trying to decide on a GTX 780 or a R9 290X
I check the benchmarks and I get conflicting info no matter where I go making it harder to decide.

I have always used AMD but want go PhysX but if the performance is going to be superior on a 290 i'll go that route.

Any suggestions and discussions would be welcome

290x is faster than the 780. Also if they are 1440P monitors then the 290x will be a better choice due to the wider memory bus and larger VRAM

I would go with Nvidia for

1) Better cooling
2) Better Driver
3) Better compatibility
4) Far Far Far less power consumption than AMD

I had a R series Radeon which I have changed with Nvidia as it was very noisy under load and my miss didn't really appreciate that at night, really happy with the choice.

It really depends what you want and like really :)

I currently have a Gigabyte Wind force 7970 and I don't hear a thing, not even coil whine. I'm looking at a another windforce GTX780 or the Asus with built on liquid cooling. Might even go with a TI. Again, not sure at all what to get.

If you want Physx, go with the 780. The R9 290X and 780 work better on some games than the other. So if Physx is important to you go with the 780, you won't be sacrificing any performance at 1080p.

1) Jhug is going for a third party solution, which is not controlled by Nvidia or AMD. i.e. If he was to purchase a Gigabyte GTX 780ti Windforce or a Gigabyte R9 290X Windforce, there would be no differentiation between the two. The coolers both have the same heat dissipating potential.

2) This may have been a thing of the past, but not anymore. I know this as i had no worries transitioning from a relatively current GTX 680 to a relatively current HD7990. No driver issues whatsoever, and keep in mind nothing is perfect. Both sides will always have their problems which are resolved in future driver revisions.

3) ??? What is this... seriously? Compatibility for what? Windows? Adobe Premier Pro CC? Because i can tell you both sides have full compatibility for these products.

4) http://techgage.com/article/amd-radeon-r9-290x-nvidia-geforce-gtx-780-ti-review/10/

Power consumption are within a few watts of each other. This was also done with the stock coolers provided from both OEM's so with third party coolers these numbers can only improve.

*I would also like to add to the fact that in semiconductors, power consumption is reduced when they receive increased cooling(third party i.e asus(dcuii), gigabyte(windforce), msi(twinfrozr), etc. Doing so would also reduce temperatures(obviously) & reduce acoustics.* :)

i'd recommend you go for the r9 290x, its performance is like 8% less than the 780 Ti and has 4gb of vram so if you decide to go higher res. , more monitors or 4k, then it's more suited, also it's better than the 780 i believe

If you are going to be doing anything other than gaming, such as work in adobe programs, then I would really recommend going the 780 as you can take advantage of its cuda cores and optimize those programs to take advantage of them. Which can seriously benefit you work performance. I just thought that should be mentioned in case it was relevant as it can bring serious performance changes while in adobe programs
