So basically I'm wondering if i require anything extra to power my graphics card. I received a power cable with the graphics card which converts two pci-e plugs into the 8 prong required for the graphic card. my power supply only has two pci-e cords coming from my power supply. I plugged one into the graphics card and one into the power cable but it still has one unused part. do i have to have both parts of the power cable connected or only one?

Solution
Yes those converters are not so good when it comes to powering a gfx card , i know they do the same thing , the convert the cable , but ppl ususally dont recommend it , instead they recommend a direct 8 pin at least.

That's a really terrible idea, considering his PSU already has the correct connectors.

No, his pins are 6+2. That means they can work as 6 pin connectors or 8 pin connectors simply by pulling away or leaving intact 2 of the separate pins.
