Heya,

I'm planning to build a new PC soon, and quite unsure on whether I should get a GTX 950 or an R9 380 for mu budget build. The current monitor I'm using is a Samsung SMB1930N monitor, with a 1360 x 768 resolution. I'm also planning to get an i5 4460 as the processor.

Now, I know that the GTX 950 would be okay for some of the newer games, and I can get a higher FPS since I'm playing on a lower resolution. It's also about $55-60 cheaper than the R9 380, so that's a huge upside even if it's a less powerful GPU.

For the R9 380, I reckon I'll be future proofed for most upcoming games, and it most certainly will run everything at 60 FPS. The one I'll be buying would be a 4 gig version, so that's another upside.

Basically, is the $55-60 difference worth it? Or is it better if I stick to the GTX 950 for now, and then wait for a suitable upgrade?

Solution
Well the R9 380 is a great card. I have it and i can play almost everything 60fps at 1080p. I would recommend it, but as you said, since you are playing at low resolution the GTX 950 would be awesome for you too. Its a tough decision to make, but i think you should just think about if you wanna save that 60$ for something else now, and think about upgrading in the future. With the GTX 950 you should be still playing 60fps+ with that resolution for years.

yeah. i guess i'll just get the gtx 950 for now. i'm guessing i might buy a bigger monitor in 2-3 years (i prefer my smaller resolution), and there surely will be better options for an upgrade after that time.
