GTX 960 128bit vs GTX 760 256bit

Solution
If you already have a variant of the r9 280 or a 760 don't bother. I would get another card to SLI my 760 before getting a 960.

If you look here http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/GTX_960_SSC_ACX_Cooler most 1080p benches it barely manages +10fps on the 760 with some exceptions. And in most 4k cases it doesn't get +1fps. It almost seems like they rebranded the 760 with better compression and made the bus smaller, but it is maxwell.

I'm either going to SLI my 760 or wait till the GTX 1060 or whatever they call it. For some stupid reason they wanted to replace the 600 series instead of just update normally.

Normally it's apparent when the bus is wider...means more stuff goes through.

However, I've seen cases in the past where on a newer card they dropped the wider bus to 128 bits however were still able to maintain throughput. How they did it? I don't know. I'd just go with benchmarks to base my decision.

The 960 isn't much good. I would always try to go with the 970. Although, it seems that NVidia wants to have their cards overclocked, so maybe the 960 can be pushed much further than what you can get out of it on stock clockings.

The more I read about it the more I think of it as a decent mod range option, it handles all games at a very playable frame rate at 1080. It excels in MOBA games (Dota and League) and handles all major titles well so it may be a better card then we give it credit for. The only problem for me at least is that either a lower end sub $200 card or a higher end $300 card falls in line with whT most people are looking for.

Some reviewers have sold their souls to nvidia it seems. Unlike the 970 the 960 seems a terrible buy.

Yet one site claims the 960 is twice as fast as a 760 wtf!!!, and another is comparing it to the 660 to hide the fact its not much better than a 760 if at all.

So glad I got my 970 now, the 970 a great buy but the 960 a bad buy.

To the OP, maxwell does have memory bus optimisations of some sort, but I wouldnt get this card.

I don't think you understand. This card out performs the 760, 660, R9 280 and 270x. It goes back and forth with the 770. It's components look worse on paper but perform better in benchmarks, not to mention how little energy this card pulls and how efficiently it uses that energy. The 960 isn't a "bad buy" per say, it's a $200 card that will let you play all of the games at decent settings and is going to support future titles.

Keep in mind this card's predecessor is the 750ti and performs very well for what it is purposed to be. Does it do as well or offer the most performance per dollar in comparison to a few older cards, the 970 and 980? No, but that is like being upset your 750ti didn't perform as well as your 660, 760, or 770.

Also Nvidia outright said overclock this card!!! I think it is clear that Intel has been able to re-purpose it's haswell cores to do damn good work on graphics cards. Sure the 970 and 980 blow this thing away but those are $330 and $430 cards. Just saying.

I disagree, one reason I dropped my 760 was that in modern games 2 gig vram no longer cuts it and I play at 1050p which isnt even 1080p.

Watchdogs and inquisitions are 2 examples.

The 960 seems barely faster than a 760, if I still was using my 760 I wouldnt be considering an upgrade to the 960. I was expecting at least 3 gig vram from this card as well.

Also why are reviewers deliberately turning down texture detail etc. when posting charts? as if they have been told to.

From what I see it can be overclocked to 1400-1450Mhz, and I hear the cooling is excellent on the cards. EVGA seems to have the more powerful fans between it and Asus, however on the contrary Asus's card seem to cool better while the fans aren't runnning. But the 960 actually has a switch on the back, and switching it on makes the fans always run. If you do this, it can stay a lot cooler and support these high overclocks.

I am not sure how the 960 does more with less hardware-spec-wise, but it does.

I would like to point out that for you the 960 wouldn't be a good choice because the cards are in the same class. But for someone with a 750ti or older card it's a good place to start. I don't know exactly what everyone expects from a $200 card.

I'd like to point out that on Linus Tech Tips he only did two short episodes. MSI 960 and then in the second the gigabyte 960 gamer and sli between the two. He called it like it was, nothing to blow the doors down but a very good $200 card.

You make a good point. I still think how energy efficient it is says a lot for it. Compact builds like the RVZ01B chassis and other really small cases with lower wattage power supplies this card would fit the bill. Like I said this card is meant to replace the 750ti, and compares most directly to the 660, not the 760.

if 200usd was my absolute limit I probably would go the AMD side, nvidias offering for this price point are subpar.

As I said historically the mid range nvidia cards match the vram on the higher priced cards directly above it. You seem to be avoiding it.

also the guy interviewing the nvidia guy challenged him that nvidias 970 and 980 beat the competition at their pricepoints but the 960 doesnt.

When it launched and even still it normally gets ~10 fps on games with some changes like a tiny bus width 4GB of VRAM that makes no sense at all. It's just not worth an upgrade unless you have a 660 or lower which most people don't by now. It just seems like stupid gambit of making a nerfed card to not jeopardize the 970s sales.

Οh I see what you mean. But unfortunately at that badget if you want to buy a new gpu, it's the only option :( You could go for 970 for +100bucks or maybe some amd card like 380 4gb?

Tis true but if you're on a budget that's not going to expand to fit a 970 anytime soon you're short on good options. AMD cards are good but their drivers aren't as good and aren't updated as often. Most games are using gameworks it seems, and several are starting to use physx and in that case AMD users can't take advantage of it.
