Question GTX 960 2GB Twin Frozr

So basically, I got a gtx 960, and the owner said that it was a 6pin
Turned out to be an 8pin
I only have a 6pin connector on my psu, so i connected it onto my gpu, and it turned on
I haven't tested it on games and stuff, but would it still work fine?
(I know i can buy a 8pin to 6pin connecter but i'm posting this because do i actually have to because it seems to be working fine with the 1x6pin even tho its an 8pin)
Will it crash under load as it won't get enough power as well?

GTX960 is a 120w GPU so the PCIe power cable only has to deliver 45w and a 6-pin is enough. I've had a 6-pin in mine with a bodged-in extra 2 grounds for nearly 10 years now, although mine won't boot with only the 6-pin attached.
