Okay so i bought a gtx 960 4gb on newegg and i used it on a dell xps 8700 no upgrades beside the card. it worked for a week and then one night in the middle of playing games on steam the computer screen kept going out i had to keep restarting the PC. And it got to the point where i couldnt even see the screen anymore after restarting my PC so i put my old gt 720 1gb in and it works fine i sent my 960 back for another one i'm scared to put the new one in the computer what could it have been? could the motherboard screwed my graphics card? or maybe it was just a bad card? please help me out and thanks.

What power supply is in your PC. Dell PCs don't usually come with a power supply designed to support a GPU. Some XPS models do come with decent GPUs so you would think those would also have a better power supply.

It sounds like yours came with a GT 720 so the power supply included is probably low wattage and questionable quality. You probably want to get a better power supply before putting the new 960 in.

well a friend gave me a 600 watt psu but didnt get the chance to use card on the psu he gave it to me after i sent the card off. it came with a 460 watt psu. and i heard gtx 960 only needs like 120 watts or somthing like that. and you know for a fact it wasnt the motherboard? or card failure?

460W is high for a stock Dell power supply but that still doesn't mean it is a good quality unit.

I can't say for a fact that it isn't your motherboard or any of the other things you are asking about but I still suspect the power supply.

What 600W power supply did your friend give you? Watts are not the only important thing in a power supply. I would try the system with the power supply your friend gave you, assuming it's not very poor quality before changing out any other hardware.

But im still not sure if i should put the gtx 960 in my pc im still not sure what was wrong here if it was a bad card, or because of motherboard or power supply.. and it did run for 1 week perfectly.

thing is i already RMA the card been waiting for over a week for it to come back. so i have to wait to test it out. i just want to make sure my motherboard wasnt messing the gpu up.
