I recently bought a GTX 960 to upgrade from my old GT 430 so I could do more serious PC gaming, however FPS improvement has been sporadic. For example, I got a 20 FPS boost in Skyrim under the same settings (1600x900, medium) but in Chivalry: Medieval Warfare I still get around 25FPS on lowest settings.

I also bought Far Cry 4 and booted it up at lowest settings at 720p and I was stuck at 20FPS, despite programs such as GeForce Experience deciding that the optimal settings were on Ultra at max res.

Does anyone have an idea as to what the issue is? I've done some basic stuff such as reinstalling drivers and what not.

System Specs:

Processor: Intel i5-4690k @ 3.5GHz
Ram: 8GB DDR3
Hard Drive: 500GB HDD
Motherboard: ASUS H81M-Plus
Power Supply: CX500M
Graphics Card: EVGA GTX 960 2GB GDDR5
Operating system: Windows 7 Professional

Your CPU must be throttling on those temps.

Did you overclock your CPU? If so bring it back down to stock.

Remount the heatsink for the CPU, those temps are dangerously high and use a decent thermal paste.
I don't think i'm right, altho one of my friends had a problem with GeForce Experience, he was constantly having drops in game such as CS:GO and Microvolts, and when he uninstalled GeForce Experienced he ran CS:GO with 100+ FPS..
You can try that out and see if it actually was the problem, altho i wouldn't rely on the optimised settings provided by GeForce experience, as, in my opinion, they are sometimes even far acurate from what the actual optimal settings are. (I'm not saying this from hate or anything, i own an Nvidia graphics card aswell 😀 )
Hope i helped you, good luck 😉

Remounted the heat sinks but I don't have any thermal paste, will take a few days to get some, and it already has dropped by 10 degrees. I will remount again once I have some paste and with any luck it'll alleviate the issue.

What is the average/healthy temp for a cpu to be at when gaming?

60C ~ 70C

Remounted with new thermal paste and now getting solid 60+ fps on max settings in Far Cry 4. Much obliged!
