GtX 960 or 970? Please help me decide.

I'll just get right to the point. I had planned to buy a gtx 970 this very night but then the 960 comes out of no where and it's $100 cheaper. My main concern with gaming is the ability to play a heavily modded skyrim with good fps(enb mods etc). So will the 960 be sufficient for that or should I cough up the money for the 970?

Just FYI I know that the 970 is better my point is do I NEED the 970 because my main interest is only to play a modded skyrim with good fps?

Get a 970, the extra hundred will show its worth down the line. I have a Evga 970 FTW and I love it.

The 960 looks like it will have even performance with the R9 280. The extra ram and bandwidth of the 970 should be especially useful for skyrim mods. If you thought the 970 was the best choice before, then it is still the best choice today.

for heavy modded skyrim you are going to want the 4gb vram on the GTX 970, 2gb just isn't enough with all the high res mods and what not.

Get the 970. Even if it's just for skyrim right now, there's bound to be another Elder scrolls game on the horizon and you'll want to mod that too. The 970 will be relevant far longer than the 960 with its extra ram. Derza10 has it right, as well, that the high res mods require a lot more vram.

If your going to be modding it's obvious to me that you should get the faster gpu it only makes since because if you go with the 960 your going to be limited to less mods. Whereas with the 970 you'll be able to do a ton of mods and still run nicely.

How's this: No, a gtx 960 will not be enough for a fully modded skyrim because the texture packs you want to use will probably require more than 2gb of vram and a nice bit of memory bandwidth the the 960 is lacking. Go for the 970, 256 bit bus and 4gb of ram.
