gtx 960 vs 1060

I recently bought a evga gtx 960 ssc 4gb.
a few days later i saw that the store could sold me a gtx 1060 for around a 30$ more.
so i got mad and talk to them and they said that because my motherboard has a pcie 2.0, it's not worth it. so was he bullshitting me or he was right? and if so what could the difference be between the 2 GPUs?

by the way i have an intel core i5 4440, and 8gb ram

almsot all graphics cards work on pci-e 2.0
yeah damn right to get a 1060 it will amx out everygame.
the salesman is mad because he will never get rid of his 960s in stock.

The 1060 performance level is about the same at the 980. So yeah there is a big difference between the 960 and the 1060.
