GTX 970 and Call of Duty Advanced Warfare - 50% GPU usage at all times

Greetins,

I just wanted to know, I play games on my CX271 which is 60 Hz LCD, so I use v-sync. What kind of bothers me, that GPU usage at CoD:AW never ever goes above 50%, it lowers to 42-45% sometimes. My framerate is stable like hell, he keeps it at 59-60 fps.

Is it okay? Is GTX 970 so strong, to run CoD:AW with maxed out settings and TX2 FSAA and 2560 x 1440?

Thank You for Your reply,

regards

The problem is, how long does usage go down? If there's a scene with more geometry and effects, etc, and it only drops to say, 55 fps for a brief moment, and then the moment is gone, the card can't respond fast enough. When you enable V-Sync, you're telling the card to *only* produce frames as fast as the monitor can display them. When gameplay starts up, the card figures out what % it needs to be for that fairly quickly. This means the card intentionally throttles itself to run at the FPS cap, but can't respond fast enough for minor, spontaneous deviations to keep at 60fps all the time. There's no point in the card running pedal to the floor at 100% power if it doesn't need to for 60fps. It generates excess heat and runs up the fans...
With VSync On, your max framerate becomes your refresh rate. So Vsync@60Hz => max of 60 fps.

Turn off Vsync and you might get even higher FPS. But to answer your question, yes, it means your 970 is running COD Maxed out with FSAA/TX2 and 2560x1440p and only drawing 50% GPU capacity. Try turning off Vsync and see if your FPS goes up.

I kind of understand mechanism, but I know that when there's scene with more geometry and effects etc. it should bump her usage up, and not leave her at 50%, but I'll try it, thank You guys! I'll update the thread.

Nice! It went 102 - 130 fps, and it juiced GPU at 96-99% continually. Thank You guys! :) Btw. it "felt" good to play it at 100 fps, was incredibly smooth, but I need to stick with 60 fps not to get used to the 100+ fps smoothness, otherwise I'd have to dump another 500 euro for another two GTX 970 just to make it steady 😀...

It generates excess heat and runs up the fans and its throwing out frames that aren't being used. It's inefficient for the card and it doesn't like running that way.

Similarly, you wouldn't drive your car at 4000 RPM to go 45 mph. The card isn't going to go at fullspeed to do 60fps if it doesn't have to.

Thank You guys for Your answers, it's all set. Graphics card works good, also syncing. I don't contract frame drops probalby, because it keeps next XY frames in frame buffer, so even when the scenery is harder to compute, it doesn't go over 50%, or so I think. Thank You once more! :)

well I have an fx 6300 at 5ghz and an ecga gtx 970. I have the same problem. 30% usage for tho. but the frames stay well above 60 with vsync off yet it still stays at 30% usage. even tho it has fast frames it still plays like shit. stutters all the time. game quits all the time. feezes all the time. rarely do I get to play it in one sitting without it quitting. I wanna know why it won't play worth a shit. is your CPU an INTEL or AMD???

of course. that's gaming 101. I always install new drivers before the game not to mention sometimes when the game quits its cause of a texture error. screen goes gray and then a box pops up and says texture error. I can play watch dogs and gta 5 even dying light maxed out no problems for hours and they never quit.
