GTX 970 COD Ghosts screen tearing

i just got my new build
i5 4690K GTX 970 and a BenQ XL 2411Z 1ms 144hx monitor
the first game i installed on it is the COD Ghosts
im getting quite a bit of screen tearing
not too much
but yes i do catch a tear every now and then
im getting 80-90 fps on an average
is this supposed to happen?
why do we get tears anyways?
anything i could do to avoid it?
 
Two ways can tears occur [to my understanding]:

1. Your GPU is too powerful, giving a lot of FPS than the monitors refresh rate can handle, that is one of the reasons why some gamers turn on v-sync.

2. Your GPU is not outputting enough FPS that your FPS is way low than your monitors refresh rate.

Looks like you have #2 man

Try forcing triple buffering whilst enabling v-sync on.

That'll remove your problem.
 
Unless you absolutely cannot live with the screen tearing, just put up with it and don't enable v-sync. It's absolute garbage for that game and will make it nearly unplayable with the amount of input lag it introduces. The best you can really hope for is to enable adaptive vsync and see if you can put up with that. This is just what happens when your fps is significantly above the 60hz refresh rate.
 


The thing is though is he doesn't have a 60 hz monitor, he's got an 144 hz one.

Turning adaptive v-sync won't really work well seeing that he's only getting 80-90 fps [according to his original post]
 
whelp. I missed that, but either way, the only thing left to say is that there's not much hope for alleviating the "issue". Just put up with it OP, everyone that plays the game does. I run the game on my XL2420T and even though it doesn't reach 120fps on just a GTX 780, it doesn't make the game any less playable having tearing.
 


I hope you know that adaptive v-sync only turns on if the FPS is higher than the monitors refresh rate.

He's only getting 80-90 FPS. Therefore it wouldn't turn on at all. He's got a 144 hz monitor.
 


i hope you know that there's an Adaptive Vsync @ half-refresh rate option.

If I was him, I'd just turn on triple buffering.
 
The thing is, if you buy a 120/144hz monitor, it is idiotic to bother putting up with any form of Vsync in a game like COD as the delay it introduces puts it completely at odds with the main reason for buying these screens in the first place: SPEED. Refresh rate sync if perfectly fine with some genres of games, but FPS isn't one of them.
 


Believe it or not, turning on triple buffering with v-sync actually reduces input lag.
 


adaptive vsync as well reduces input lag.
 
Ghosts is one of the worst console ports ever made. I would not take seriously ANYTHING that happens in that game. Just play another game really. Like it's the newer game and it has less players than BLOPs2/Blops1/MW3/MW2, that tells you something. Imo just put most things on low/medium with your build if u wanna enjoy, the graphics arent good at max anyway.
 
For the sake of experimentation, I tried triple buffered vsync and adaptive sync and while it does help reduce the input lag, the small amount there is still somewhat noticeable. In most other games, it wouldn't be a problem, but in CoDG it's exacerbated by the fact that the engine has a 90FPS limit, so you'll never get the full benefit of a 120/144hz monitor and will just increase input lag for no good reason. My vote is still for vsync off. Screen tearing isn't even an issue since you always have to slow down considerably when you take aim.
