I recently purchased gtx 970 gaming 4g, and I noticed that it causes my pc to reboot.
This was a clean build, my specs are:
windows 8.1 pro
Processor: AMD FX 8350
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance
SSD: 120gb
HDD: 2 x 1TB
PSU: Corsair VS 650
GPU: GTX 970 GTX 970 GAMING 4G
Motherboard: ASUS m5a99x evo r2.0
Cooler: corsair h100i liquid cooler
I ran benchmark tests and stress tests on gpu and cpu, I had no issues, the system didn't reboot or crash.
I noticed GPU only crashes playing high graphics demanding games like GTA V, MadMax, etc. The system didn't crash while playing games like dota 2, global offensive.
While running the furmark test, if I switched from the stresstest application to another application (Alt +tab)
I searched a lot on internet and these are the things that I've done:
1. Checked if it was thermal issue
It wasn't a thermal issue, the temperature of GPU always was under 70 degree celsius
the temperature of CPU and Motherboard was 25 and 30 respectively.
2. Checked if it was a driver issue
I clean installed several previous drivers, my system still kept on crashing.
also installed windows 10 and 7 just to be sure it wasn't an operating system issue.
3. Underclocked and overclocked
Underclocked and ran games and furmark: caused system to reboot
Overclocked and ran games and furmark : caused system to reboot
4. Checked if all fans were working, even the one on PSU.
I've pinned it down to two causes, its either my GPU is defective or my PSU isn't supplying enough juice for the GPU.
I'm very frustrated as to what I should do, and if it is a driver issue or a software issue, if this can be fixed.
I also used it on linux mint, without playing any games, it made my pc reboot after 10-15 mins.
also, i could play gta 5 for around 40mins before it crashes and reboots my pc.
There is no BSOD, the screen goes completly black.
I checked the event viewer, there is nothing related to GPU, only one critical issue being : Kernel-Power.
Please help me! If you know any fix, or things I can do or try?
Should I return PSU and GPU for replacement as it is still in warranty period.
