GTX 970 getting extremely hot while playing games

Basically whenever I play a game for more than 30 seconds my GPU temperature starts to rise up to dangerously high levels of like 90°C at which point the card throttles itself back to 80 which drops me to FPS in the single digits. And this basically repeats over and over again.

It doesn't even matter if the game is graphically intensive or not, I tried playing games from 10 years ago and still had the same issue.

I've already experimented a bit with different fan settings in MSI afterburner and I also re-applied new thermal paste to the gpu heatsink, but none of that has helped.

My PC:

-Gainward Nvidia GTX 970
-AMD FX-8350
-970 Gaming Motherboard (MS-7693)
-8GB RAM
-Windows 10

sound to me an issue of ventilation;

1. does the fans(s) run on the video card ?
2. did you change the fan spin rate with a software causing the card to overheat?
3. what case do you have and how are the other fans setup to draw hot air out of your case?
4. possible it is time to get heatsink paste and redo the heatsink on it (mine has been sitting at 77 under stress test and I have been thinkin about it myself.

1. Yes, and it's extremely loud.
2. No it was already overheating prior to installing the software
3. I have no idea actually. It's a Sharkoon but I couldnt figure out the exact model
4. As I said in my post I did that already. Multiple times actually, to make sure I didn't use too much.

Are you doing any overclocking with that card? Do you use msimafterburner just for fan speed control? Is this problem new? How long has this been going on? One person asked about case fans. How many do you have installed? What are your CPU temps? Did you have this card as new or is it a used item?

-No overclocking
-I just used it for the fan speed control.
-I've had the problem for a few weeks to some extent but it got worse in the past few days.
-EDIT: I guess I have one in the front (is that a case fan? Im a total noob on this subject sry)
-My cpu temps are typically like 50-60 while while ingame.
-I bought the card new but I had it for like 2 years now.

A fan in the front is a case fan. It would not hurt to add more case fans if your case allows them. The 8350 CPU generates quite a bit of heat by itself. Just for grins, what kind of cooler is on that CPU? Outside of ensuring all of your fans , air intakes, and entire case is dust free, you do not have many options left besides adding more case fans if possible. If your power supply is top mounted, ensure that the exhaust fan and exhaust area is clean of any dust build up. I am out of ideas. Maybe the card is just a lemon and aging prematurely.

One last point, is your video card a blower style? Regardless, the more cooler air you can get flowing through that case the more effective your GPU fan will be at cooling the GPU itself and the video ram. Test your temps just for grins with the case panels removed and see if that makes a difference. If so, more air flow will be your solution.

Yeah, case fans can go a long way in reducing the heat!. After all, GPU fans are really just pushing the ambient temps inside the case over your components. An influx of additional fresh air into your case via fans will reduce that ambient temp inside your case thus allowing your gpu fans to push a cooler and thus more effective air flow across your components. That 8350 generates a lot of heat within that case.

Hold on, before you get a case fan. Have you tried to observe temps with your case side panels removed yet? If not please do that.If you see a significant drop in temps then you know air flow is your problem. As far as a case fan is concerned.....You might want to install multiple fans if your case allows. The more air flow the better. Do not skimp out on the number of fans.

I can't see this being an issue with not enough case fans, although adding more can't hurt. For a GPU to hit 90 degrees in 30 seconds while the fan is running full blast, suggests there is a major fault in the card's cooling. Either the cooler isn't making good contact with the GPU or the cooler has failed.

The most likely one is the poor contact, either something is preventing the cooler from sitting flat to the GPU or you're not using enough paste.....while too much paste makes a mess it doesn't effect the cooling, too little can be a major issue.
As for a the cooler failing, I have heard of heat pipes leaking the coolant out, but this is extremely rare.

The difference is only about 3-5°C with both panels removed.

I don't think I used too little to be honest. I went with the normal pea size plus a little more.

We are striking out on helping you solve this problem. Maybe the ultimate sin is that your card is bad. Just a thought here, what driver version are you running for that card. I do not think this would apply to you though, but a while back some of the 1070 cards were running hot and had incorrect fan control until finally corrected by a driver update. Yeah, I am going for all the straws with that one. Best regards to you. The Jazz is out of suggestions.
