I recently bought a MSI gtx 970 gaming 4g (twin frozr). I tried valley and i was shocked after a few minutes my temps were at the default limit of the afterburner which is 79. So i did my research, my temps were actually high. Almost everyone of them is at 68-69 tops. So i stressed it even mire to see how far it will go. I run it at default clocks but i raised the temp limit to 90. It hit 85 @89-90% fan rpm in 15 minutes. So i tries opening my case and it only dropped to 84.

I returned it to the store, after a week they called me only to tell me that my gpu was tested good. I was like reaaalllyyy? The temps i was getting is normal???

What do you guys think? I know it wasn't normal. Can i email MSI directly to ask for a replacement? Btw i am fron the Philippines.

Return to manufacturer honestly thats not the temperatures you should be getting at stock, a 20celsius increase compared to other cards at stock performance is a dodgy card imo.
I presume you have air conditioning in your home? As you live in a hot country a hot room increases stock temperatures obviously. But your other temps are fine lol, but yer if it really is bothering youi return it as it shouldn't be like that but it won't kill it, depends if you can be bothered 😉

threshold is 95celsius so its not melting xD but i have sli 970 and i can max both out and never go above 65celsius with no more than 30-40% of fans running on them.

What are your other systems temps?
What is your fan configuration in your system?
Are you OCing??

@jakegroves Top mounted rad as exhaust,1 rear ehaust, 2 front intake fans, 1 bottom intake.

Running stock cpu and gpu, my ram is in xmp.

Temps
Cpu - idle 39-44, load - 50-55
HDD - 40-45

@hexit mybtemp dropped 1 degree celcius upon opening my case, so clearly airflow is nit the issue.

Hmm so your setup is fine because positive pressure is always better than negative pressire.
But anwyas the maximum temperature (threshold) is 98celsius for gtx 970. So it won't degrade your card. Also question ... when it is idle are your fans at 0% ??

85 celsius is fine but going 90+ is close to threshold ... run openhardwaremonitor and play an intensive game e.g. gta5 for a couple of hours and check what was the maximum temperature after that will give you a realistic idea if it is okay :)

But yer i wouldn't raise temperature anymore than 85/90 celsius.

Just got my gpu. Tested all possible fan config, open or close case still the same. They still gave it back at this condition. While gaming shadow of mordor temps are 72-76. Furmark reached 86. What should i do?

If it really bothers you RMI (Return to manufacturer) but if you can't its fine it shouldn't degrade its performance :)
