I have gigabyte gtx 970 on MSI gaming 7. The 970 is connected by hdmi to yamaha 575-r. I do get audio, but my question is... is the audio im getting from that connection using the hd audio capabilities of the mobo or is this audio from the 970 itself? Would the sound from the optical out on the mobo be better?

Solution
That's the HDMI audio and it's digital and should be as good or better than the HD audio output from the motherboard. You should be able to bypass the HDMI audio by connecting a 3.5mm sound cable between the motherboard output and the device you're connecting to. You may have to disable HDMI sound profiles in the control panel sounds applet though. Or it may disable them automatically when a device is connected to the 3.5mm jack.
