Just finished a new build, right-clicked desktop, went to Screen Resolution and Advanced settings to see the GPU, and it says:

Adapter Type: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970

Adapter Information:
Chip Type: NVIDIA
DAC Type: NVIDIA Corporation
Adapter String: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter
Bios Information: BIOS-P/N@N10669

Total Available Graphics Memory: 256MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 0MB
System Video Memory: 0MB
Shared System Memory: 256MB

The screen resolution is also stuck on 800x600 which I've never seen before, does anyone have any ideas?

Solution
Download the video drivers from www.nvidia.com and install it. You are currently using the most basic Microsoft display drivers only meant to give a display at all.

Have you installed the most current Nvidia driver? Because you aren't using it it seems.

The default Microsoft video drivers will not be able to use the graphics card's memory, it will in turn take a (small) chunk of your system memory for graphics tasks. Your video is being run via software, not the hardware of the Nvidia card.
