Gtx 970 or amd Radeon r9 290x

Both good cards, 290X will be better on the VRAM side since all 4GB are running full speed as opposed to only 3.5GB on the 970, but if you're gaming at 1080p that won't matter in too many games. If you're staying at 1080p I'd go with the 970; if you're going for higher resolution I'd go with the 290X. Marginally higher FPS on the 970 side mean nothing if VRAM gets breached at 3.5GB because then you'd have stuttering. It's going to depend on how much VRAM you'll use basically.

If playing GTA V - the VRAM usage can creep beyond 3.5Gb with settings turned right up. I'm using a R290X and settings are maxed out bar MSAA which is set at 4x and it's using 3.7Gb of VRAM - runs fine! (oh at 1080p also) Maybe look at a 8Gb R290X?

At 1080p most games are good at 3GB max, at 1440p I start tipping the 3GB, I use my 780Tis unless I hit a VRAM wall then I switch over to my 290Xs, so far I haven't found anything the 290Xs can't handle VRAM wise at 1440p outside of going crazy with supersampling or something.

well where i live, the 290x 4gb is 50-60 dollars less than the Gtx 970, and im having trouble deciding for my new build (planning on staying with 1080p not more) so do think that you have no regrets with Card ? and what are the down sides compared to the Gtx 970 ?

Hey how did you go?

Downsides to 290x are as follows;

1. heat issues (AMD generally run hotter than Nvidia crads)
2. Fewer and further between driver updates - but currently has been better bar most are beta updates until WHQ.

Personally, I am very happy with my 290X - Oh AMD run heaps better utilizing DiretX 12 than Nvidia cards currently.
