GTX 970 or GTX 1060 3gb for FHD gaming and some GPU data science?

Hey guys,

I am planning on making a graphics card update to my sandy bridge system. I am currently running GT 640 on it. But I wanna upgrade to a better graphics card.

I am not really a heavy gamer and I won't be playing anything in higher than FHD. I do some GPU based machine learning and protein modelling every once in a while.

So I have an offer from one of my friends for a new MSI GTX 970 for $200 CAD or buy a GTX 1060 3gb for $280+tax CAD. Is the 1060 an overkill for my work or is it actually worth it? From what it seems 1060 3gb is not that much better than 970, whereas the 1060 6gb is.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks beforehand for any reply!

The 3GB 1060 is a lot better than the 970. The performance difference between the 3GB 1060 and 6GB is not really that great.

Nah its a new GTX970. My friend got it before 10 series came out but never really used it.
