I'm wanting to upgrade my pc soon. I'm wanting to get a GTX 970, but if I do that my FX 6300 might bottleneck it on certain games. So I thought about getting a i5 4690k and a good gaming motherboard then upgrading the video card later. Both are around $350 each. I'm kind of stuck on what I should do. AMD doesn't really offer the performance Intel has right now so I can't keep my motherboard. I only have around $400 and I would have to buy either the i5+MOBO or GTX 970.

Thanks for the help.

SPECS:
CPU: AMD FX 6300 3.5ghz
COOLER: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
MOBO: MSI 970A-G43
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 8gb
STORAGE: WD 1tb
GPU: MSI Radeon HD 7850 2gb
PSU: Corsair CX500M
CASE: CM HAF 912

The 6300 would be fine. Get the GPU and test it your self if you want to.Don't assume there will be a problem until you actually get the card. The way tot ewst is by running MSI afterburner and Kombustor and watching the GPU usage. If it isn't staying at 100% and is bouncing around all over the place then there is a bottleneck. You do need a better PSU though if you want to upgrade.

I agree with Blackbird below. That board is very bad and may (and may already) cause issues.

I have a GTX 970 with an i5 4690k. I had an fx 8350 installed when I got the 970 and was getting very bad minimum FPS and microstuttering. When I got a 4690k everything runs very smooth now!!! I am also using the Maximus VII hero Z97 mobo.

I was using an ASRock 990fx killer mobo with the fx 8350 and had terrible performance. I sent both those items back to newegg. and got the i5 4690k and the Maximus VII hero. Im telling you from very recent experience the GTX 970 will perform terrible with an AMD CPU.

Get the Intel chip and board and darn near any GPU will work wonderfully!!!!! Hope this helps you decide.
