GTX 970 or r9 290

Hey guys

Im trying to decide in an upgrade before The Witcher 3 arrives over my GTX 660.

Ive read much and narrowed it down to the GTX 970 and the r9 290

Now i have good and bad things regarding both Cards. The GTX has the VRam issue and a crazy sounding thing they call "frametime drops" and The R9 consumes alot of power and AMD afaik is not great at Driver support.

My main concern with the 290 is the Witcher 3 uses Nvidias Hairworks. Does anybody know how good or bad a 290 would handle that feature?

I'd recommend the GTX 970 over the 290 unless you plan to game at resolutions higher than 1440p.

The 970 is good for 1080p mate, 1440p would be more towards r9 290. And at the moment r9 290 has some nice prices I see them at 220£ on some sites. I am sure r9 290 can work with nvidia's hairworks by the way. Even the gtx 760 runs hairworks nicely, why won't the r9 290 unless nvidia wanted it only for nvidia which will be a joke since amd can just do the same attribute too.

If you take a look at all the titles benchmarked in the following review, you'll see that the 290 and in most cases, the 290x don't win out until resolutions reach 2160p.
