So I have an HD6850 and it's past time I upgraded. I have the cash for the 970, but honestly, I really dont want to buy it. If the next AMD series feature 20nm , performance will rise by a lot, right? But I'll have to wait until summer for that , and if the 39x series costs too much then I will have to get the 970, which will be 7 months old. What do I do? *I should note that I run ubuntu linux alongside my windows and the AMD drivers for linux are a complete and utter joke.

If you don't play in 1080p resolution and don't bother playing games in High/Ultra settings, you should wait the next generation of AMD cards if you want. Of course there is a risk of high price, but I don't think it will be more expensive than GTX 970 today.

I have a HD 7950 and it runs most of the games in Ultra and 1080p resolution smoothly until today (Dragon Age Inquisition is an example, and running in Directx 11 not Mantle), of course my card is a little overcloked, but it is handling very well. The GTX 970 which is way stronger than my card will endure much more. And the GTX 970 has support to directx 12 already.

Of course the AMD next generation will be probably stronger than GTX 9xx but I think there is no need for it. I would go to GTX 970.
