No the GTX 970 has 4GB VRAM; though, 3.5GB is faster VRAM while the last 500MB is slower VRAM. With 1080p this is not an issue as it does not use more than the first 3.5GB faster VRAM. When the last 500MB of VRAM is used, the system is limited to the slower speed of that VRAM. So yes, I mean't 4GB not ~3.5GB.

Also, at 1080p this is not an issue...it only becomes an issue at 1440p or 4K (obviously) which is why this is a GREAT 1080p card with much better drivers and more efficient then the R9 2xx/3xx series. Again, one card is not really better than the other, but instead they are better for different reasons and in different ways.
The R9 380 is not necessarily "better" but it does have more VRAM, BUT if you are gaming at 1080p the 4GB VRAM on the GTX 970 is more than enough. More VRAM is required for higher resolutions, so before calling one card better than the other, it really depends on their needs and the other specs of the PC.

I don't like doing this, but did you mean *3.5GB VRAM*, well I guess the only reason why you should go with the 970 is less power consumption and better drivers. Still, I think the extra VRAM is worth it considering that you might find the 390 cheaper than the 970 at some stores.

Note: I said R9 380, ment 390, sorry.

The 3.5GB was a joke, but I see what you're saying. So the Gigabyte G1 is the best option if you're going with nVidia.
