GTX 970 requires 1 x 6-pin & 1 x 8-pin... Help

Solution

Dont try and use...
Gtx 970 is compatible with your Mobo and PSU. Just put your gpu in "1 x PCI Express x16 slot". And use your PSU one EPS/ATX12V 8 pin and one PCI-E 6-pin connector in your gpu. If you miss even a single cable from both of them, the gpu will be dead.

Careful there, that's some rather dangerous advice you're giving. An 8 pin EPS cable is very different from an 8 pin PCI-E power cable; they're keyed differently and don't have the same pinout. Trying to force the 8 pin EPS cable into the 8 pin PCI-E slot on the graphics card would be rather unwise, to say the least...

As Chenw says above, the CX600 should have two 6+2 pin PCI-E power cables, so the OP is all set to go using those.

Dont try and use the 8 pin EPS.

Use the PCI-e 6+2 connectors.

Solution

Are there any videos or anything explaining how to make sure I do this correctly? I don't want to cock it up and it's my first time replacing any hardware other than RAM.

Thanks

Well the EPS and PCI-E pins are key'ed differently, meaning that EPS pin shouldn't go into PCI-E plughole easily. PCI-E 6+2 is easily distinguishable by the fact that it has two pin heads on the card end: 1 big part where it has 6 pins, and the other smaller part which has two pins. EPS cable on the other hand is two heads with 4 pins each.

On your PCI-E cable, the pin should have a latch on the side, that gives the orientation which the pins should be inserted into the plug, the PCI-E plugs on the GPU have catches that is designed for the latch to lock onto it. So the latch and the catch should be facing the same way. Once you face them the same way, the pins should slide in easily once you match the holes and pins together. For the 6 pin, the two pin part should be hanging outside of the plug, while on the 8 pin plug, all 8 pins should go into the plug together, rather than 6 first then the last 2 after.

Not sure if I described it clearly, but hopefully you see what I mean if you compare it to the actual card and cables.

Its really simple. Grab the 2x 6+2 connectors, plug in both to the card. On the 6 pin connector just leave the +2 part disconnected, but on the 8 pin connect both the 6 and the +2.

So, just to clarify, the motherboard, power supply etc are compatible with the 970, I just need to make sure I connect it correctly?

Yup. Slot it into the first PCI-E slot, then connect the pci-e power connectors from the PSU.

Thank you, you've been a great help!
