I just built my pc yesterday and my 970 is running at 55 degrees while idle. Benchmarking videos show that it doesnt break 50 while under load in csgo which is my main game. I am pretty sure this isn't normal.

Solution
The temperature depends on the fan profile you made. Set them to 100%, let them cool it down for a minute or 2 and run the test again. You'll probably never reach 60. When you see people test their temperature, you don't necessarily know what fan configuration they use, their room's temperature and what case fans they have to increase the air flow quality. You can't always compare with others.
some cards (msi i think is one) will disable the fans untill the graphics card his 60C degrees. this is a feature to keep your pc silent at idle, so when your card is not under load the fans will not turn on, but once the card is stressed and under load the fans will turn themselves on to cool the card. make sense? what gpu do you have

I have an evga with the ac 2.0 cooler. I know the fans won't be on but it should not be 55 degrees while idle. 45 max

The idle temperature depends on many things, including what processes are running on the GPU in the background, your room temperature and the case's air flow. Install EVGA's precision X and set up a fan profile. Honestly, with the fans between 10% and 20%, you don't hear it much if you have any other fans running in the case, and it makes a massive difference in terms of temps.

It should not be this hot without the fans on. Nobody ive talked to runs this hot idle.

there has been a few people that have their cards running just below 60C just like the OP. it can be that hot without problems, thats all it is but to the OP, i would try to adjust your case fans and try different setups to get better airflow in your case. or use something such as msi afterburner to turn your fans on to 10% at idle.

He's using an EVGA card, so he should be using Precision X, not afterburner.

If you did like me and built your PC with having a good air flow as a priority, most of your components probably run cool at all time. It's great that it runs cool when you turn the fans off, but it also proves that the fans weren't doing much at idle.

If you don't mind me asking, what are your current clocks on the core and memory?

Ehhh Precision X is good software but for whatever reason it conflicts with CSGO so I quit using it, and honestly I like MSI Afterburner better. Also, if my fans are off I run about 55 degrees idle as well.

GPU: 2x EVGA GTX 970 SC ACX 2.0

I didn't know about the CSGO issue, and I honestly don't really play FPSs, I'm more into RPGs and open-world games. I haven't tried Afterburner with an EVGA card, so I didn't want to recommend it. It is a more complete and precise program for sure, Precision is really basic and just ''works''.

I now keep fans at 10% and it is a cool 35 degrees. I overclocked and did the heaven benchmark max settings with no AA and didn't break 65 degrees. Just making sure I'm not the only one

i normally have my card at around 1530mhz core, memory not too sure, just added +150.
