currently have an asus G11CD with an intel i5, gta 970 graphics card
and 16gb of memory, looking to upgrade my card to a 1080,
currently playing flight sim 2020 and it isn't the smoothest so my question is,
if i upgrade to a 1080 am i likely to get a more smoother flight? or am i
maybe looking at upgrading the cpu and motherboard?

Solution
Yes will be same size as 1080 maybe smaller

That i5 will deffintely bottleneck a 3070 or 1080, especially at 1080p, upgrading your CPU to something decent would be much more beneficial then the jump from a 970 to a 1080, if your using 1080p i feel like you wont see a great deal of performance increase with the 3070 due to your CPU

so would you say to upgrade my cpu to an i5 8400 or higher?

Sadly for your motherboard you're locked to the Gen 6 and 7 cpus from intel, so the i7- 7700(k) would be the best cpu you could put on that board.

Moving to a 8xxx or 9xxx series Intel cpu would mean you would have to change your motherboard as well.
