gtx 970 uncontrollable overclocking

Hi everyone,

A few months ago, I bought a gtx 970 4g msi graphics card. it worked perfectly fine untill a week ago. I saw that my card was overclocking at 1300mhz. I checked my msi gaming app, but it was defenitely on gaming mode, whitch should not overclock anything right? so when I checked msi afterburner, it said that I was overclocking as well! so I tried to limit it manually in msi afterburner, but it kept on overclocking. I have also updated my gpu driver. I'll stop using my gpu untill i've got it fixed. some benchmarks: 4g ram, i7 2600 cpu, G650M psu and a stock case and motherboard

Thats normal, its called Nvidia GPU boost, basically if your temperatures and power usage are within limits then it will clock the card up to give you more performance. Its totally safe.

Dear Rob Crez,
I think I fried my gpu, I have the worst cooling in the entire world and I think Nvidia GPU boost has been overclocking for 6 months, all the time. I now play rust at good graphics everyting turned/switched off at 30-40fps... I'll stop gaming in the meantime (should have done this earlier). can you please help me?

The card is supposed to overclock itself. It's designed to do that. If the gpu hits its thermal threshold then it will automatically downclock itself to get its temperatures back to normal status. Then it will start the overclock process all over again. It's normal and its designed to do this. All nvidia cards do this all the way back to the introduction of gpu boost a few years ago.

but that doesn't explain on good graphicssettings with rust. i tried to do fantastic and it plays it with ease at 50 fps. *solved*

Well rust isn't a very wel optimized game. Use nvidia control panel and yu could set power mode for rust specifically to prefer maximum performance. Could be since the game isn't calling for the gpu to work very hard it's literally not out putting much juice. When you turn it higher in the settings then the game is asking for more power from the gpu. Is rust the ONLY game this happens on? If so then it's a problem with the game. It's not a issue with your gpu because of the gpu boost doing what it's designed to do.
