GTX 970 vs 1060: price vs performance

I can't decide whether I want to build my first PC with a GTX 970 or a 1060 gpu. Anybody want to weigh in and give some pro's and con's to either/both of these gpus?

pro:
- faster
- cooler
- quieter
- more power efficient

contra:
- no SLI support
- sometimes a wee bit more expensive


buying a 970 makes absolutely no sense unless you already own one and wanna go SLI

Having gamed on both, get the 1060. It hasn't struggled on anything at 1080p/high settings thrown at it. The 970 struggles a little bit in some games.

also 1060 is more powerful in VR.

I love my Strix 970 (I game at 1440p with a 144hz G-Sync monitor), but I bought it in 2015 - wouldn't buy one now.

a 1060 is roughly a 980 in performance. so you're asking the difference between a 970 and a 980 which is a pretty big change. if you compare with that in mind, the 1060 6 gb is a no brainer over a 970

Hands down the 1060 6GB. Don't bother with the 3GB version as games going into next year even at 1080p will be approaching close to that (a few are now like Dues Ex). The 1060 is about 15% faster on average over the 970.

While I've been very pleased with my 970s (SLI), they are two years old. If I was buying a new GPU, I would immediately rule out one already two and a half years old.

Isokolon is right. The GTX 970 is still a relevant card for midrange gaming "IF" it were priced competitively. They're not.

Best thing to do is to check the benchmarks of the games you play and see which runs better on them.

Currently they are pretty close on performance, some games are better on each.

If you'd asked me a short time ago I would have said the GTX 1060 6GB. This newest comparison shows the RX 480 maturing nicely. Its absolutely is faster in the newest DX12 and Vulcan games.

If you can get your hand on a cheap GTX 970 then it is a better option, you can get if for 160$ which makes it better at price performance ratio.
