The Gigabyte Xtreme Gaming 970 draws me in because of the RGB lighting but the Galax exoc 1060 might be the better choice in the long run since my motherboard only supports crossfire and not sli and another question rises 3gb vs 3.5gb+0.5gb...I would appreciate opinions of other people

Solution

I couldn't find any reasons to support the 970 I would prefer the GTX 1060 3Gig its better than 970 in all ways the less Vram never bother about it in any settings and at any resolution I can tell you that the GTX 1060 3Gb is better than the GTX 970 4GB.
You can check out benchmark scores and you tube videos etc..
GTX 1060 3Gb is the best card for 1080p Gaming. Its one of the best cards that provide the best performance for its price
The GTX 1060 3GB is a little faster than the GTX 970 and more power efficient. The extra .5 GB of VRAM the 970 has doesn't seem like much of a selling point. If I had a 1080p monitor I'd go for the $189.99 new Galax 1060 vs spending almost that much for a used 970.

Well both the 970 and 1060 are R3800($280,81) and local classifieds actually seem to be priced higher since people dont want to drop their prices... cheapest ive seen a 970 being advertised for secondhand is R 3250($240).

Cheapest 1060 6GB is R4100($304,70) but it is a zotac mini variant,a galax exoc 1060 6GB is R4400($326,99) would the bigger form factor/dualfan vs single fan give much of a performance differanc(thermal throttling)?

Performance wise it would be very similar, but the dual fan will more more air away from the GPU. It generally provides more cooling.

Everyone is tattling ona bout a 3GB 1060, is that a thing? Obviously but I am looking at a 6GB GTX1060 to replace my GTX 970, after trawling benchmarking sites and PC mags I guess it is good. My last shot right here right now, tell me why I should keep the GTX 970 or Ditch it for the 1060.

GTX 1060 6GB is really good but for a bit less money the 3GB is also good only like 5 to 10% less powerful than the 6Gb version and it wont make any big difference in 1080p
