Hi guys, iam sure this isnt the first time this kind of discussion has been posted (may not be last perhaps). But iam having an awfully difficult time on deciding between a replacement for my current 7970+R9 280X crossfire setup. Thinking of switching to the green team this time, and want a single GPU experience as so many games nowadays do not utilize multi GPUs.

Bit of background about my system, originally i had a XFX 7970 ghz and a DD edition in crossfire, about 4 months ago my ghz edition (it was on top, so arguably felt the most "heat") literally blew up, and had to send it for RMA. I got a reconditioned Powercolor R9 280X, but still not very happy with the tempretures and performance this combination offers. They can peak up to 93C under furmark, and goes over 90 in unigine valley after about 2 loops. In game performance is very loud as well, the fans appear to spool to there max in games like metro last light. So needless to say, i have considered a replacement in the form of a nice single GPU setup.

Currently, i have been considering the Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 gaming which go for around £290-300. However, the GTX 780Ti in some places have come down in price, like the one overclockers.co.uk sells which is a zotac GTX 780 TI like this

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-078-ZT&adword=google/pla&gclid=CjwKEAiAhcGjBRDot_fjjtPKrgsSJACNYh76IocEs-sGjKwTS6bJi6yvUHKE_1q3UfFSSJ6aUxRyrxoCswTw_wcB

There is also the Gainwards phantom GTX 780 ti which goes for around 340, which is within my budget also

I know that the G1, is almost tied with the GTX 780Ti in some benchmarks, beating it in others, but overall which card will offer better 1440p experience? The G1 is a highly overclocked card, the Ti series thats available within my price range (as shown) are (moderately?) overclocked. I'am planning to overclock them, so i need to know which would offer most performance when overclocked.

Also i like to know if investing in the GTX 780ti would be a trade off for visual fidelity compared to what the new maxwell cards offer for speed? Do you also think as the drivers mature, Nvidia would be able to exploit the new architecture of the Maxwell chips with upcoming drivers than the Kepler system on the Ti?

In case your wondering, my rig is:
Asus X79 Deluxe
Intel 4930k chilled by H100i
8gb corsair 1600mhz ram
Soundblaster Z soundcard
NZXT H440 case (in black and red ^ ^)
EVGA supernova G2 1300w psu

Power is in great abundance on my rig, i have a 1300w PSU :D (i got it as i planned to get a twin R9 290X crossfire rig)

But the thing i really want to know is, will the maxwell card provide better visual fidelity with its new "features". Iam not that technically aware to understand most of these new futures and how it would effect stuff etc.

Also which would be a better card after few months, where drivers mature and nvidia could potentially exploit more ounce of performance out of their new architecture (assuming they do that kind of stuff).

yes the 780ti is a good card but i would recommend the 970 due to its newer architecture (having a bit more features as well as saving power and being a little faster)

plus the 970 has a pixel rate of ariund 66 if i am correct which is decent enough for 1440p

also it is a bit less demanding n the PSU if you ever decide to SLI the 970(and cheaper too)

also there is an increasing amout of VRAM req for gaming(due to PS4 and xbox having 8gb vram if i am correct) so it is beter to have the 4gb 970 than the 3gb 780ti

maybe in a year or so new drivers or maxwell will take advantage of its architecture(a bit uncertain on this one)

hope it helps

Thanks for the help guys, and sorry for the late reply.

I ended up getting a GTX 980, Gainwards Phantom edition as they were going for very cheap on blackfriday from Scan.com. Its pretty amazing so far, totally silent and cool unlike my previous crossfire mess
