The GTX 970 and R9 390 are roughly the same performance.
The GTX 980 is about 10-20% faster than both at a higher cost, but also a more capable higher resolution card.
Ultimately it's up to you which you think is more future-proof.

Answer these questions yourself:
What resolution are you gaming at?
What's your current budget?
When are you upgrading next?
Will you be gaming in 4K in the near future?
What is your current PC specs and can your PSU supply enough power?

Between the GTX 970 and the R9 390, I'd personally go for the GTX 970 because I had that card and loved it. Now I own a GTX 980 and love that one even more. Ultimately, no one can answer this questions except for you. Do some research and find out what fits your needs. Hope this helps.

Best value for money is the R9 390. It even keeps up with the GTX 980 in titles like Star Wars Battlefront. The 'worst' but still ok choice between the three is the GTX 970. In terms of being future proof, the R9 390 also takes the cake.
