gtx 970 vs r9 290x

Hi. Im goinig to buy a new gpu for gaming but i dont know which one. I was planning on buying gta and play that but i also play bf4 and other games. Whats the fastest, gtx 970 or r9 290?

I was planning on playing on 1920x1080 but i also want to ''scale'' to 1440p and so on.

Specs: i5 4670k, xfx 650w, asus VI hero 8 gb ram, 256ssd 840 pro samsung.

what should i get? Im going to buy a used gpu from sweden, so i only want to know what will perform better.

Also, should i try and wait for the r9 300series? But i will need a gpu until then. Thanks in advance

the r9 290x and gtx 970 are pretty similar in performance? the r9 290x does use alot more power and dissipates more of it in heat.

it might be wise to wait for the r9300 series to see what that will be like and what it might do to the prices. but seeing as you cant wait, I'd say, go for the gtx 970

Both perform very similar, there is no clear winner. I would choose whichever best fits your budget.
If you are going to run higher resolutions keep in mind that the GTX 970 has a slower segment of 512mb of vram compared to the rest of its total vram, though most users report having no issues at all.

I personly own the r9 290 and it is a beast and I was able to find one on amazon for 200$ ps amazon warehouse and the used section may not look like a smart buy but it save me lots of money and got the components I wanted for alot less

I dont know if you've heard of sweclockers but its a big swedish computer site, according to their test the r9 290x beats the gtx 970. Can i get some charts or something that proves that the gtx 970 really is better than a r9 290x? Thanks for the answers so far

Neither really beats the other, they perform similar, the difference is usually a few fps difference, depending on what game and setup.
