GTX 970 VS R9 390 Debate

Just answer your prefered card and reason for it.
Only category im intrested in is 1080p ( i don't plan on getting 1440p or 4k monitor).
Specs right now: i5 3350p, gtx 650ti boost, b75-d3v mobo, 8GB ram.

R9 390 is better for higher resolutions

At 1080p the cards are about equal in performance aside from a few frames difference. Pick whichever fits your budget, works with your power supply and is the most aesthetically pleasing to you

Thing is, some games are optimized to perform worse on AMD cards, while the 390 gives overall the better performanse over the 970. That is why im in doubt.

The 970 is better at 1080p and a good choice because of it's lower power consumption. At any higher resolution the R9 390 shows a pretty good lead.

The math has been done between AMD vs NVIDIA in power consumption at the difference is minimal. Every game will handle each card differently, but most games the 390 and 970 are right next to each other in frames. The heat is only an issue if you have a case with poor airflow.

The power difference is actually pretty considerable

970. Nvidia drivers haven't had the problems some AMD drivers have had. Plus with them being pretty similar in price/performance the 970 wins because of power consumption, cooling, and the extra nvidia goodies like shadow play

Actually, there are people who have had issues with GTX 970 and no issues with AMD. Plus AMD drivers are getting better

The GTX 970 is superior at 1080p now, mostly due to CPU overhead limitations under DX11. As time goes on, the R9 390 will overtake the GTX 970 in performance, including at 1080p.

You only have to look at Star Wars Battlefront's graphics and performance on both cards to know which route things are going in.

My experience has been the opposite. Maxwell had had far more driver crashes and sensitivity to overclocking in games. In the past 20+ years I've had multiple AMD GPUs, including several crossfire setups, and far fewer driver and compatibility issues.

Also, AMD scales better and outperforms NVidia under Win10 + DX12 so your OS will be a factor. All the benchmarks we have right now are old.
