Gtx 970 vs r9 390x

Hey everyone,

Needing to upgrade my gpu finally. Currently running a 6970 but doesn't quite cut it now.

Looking at the 970 or the 390x. About a hundred dollar difference which doesn't bother me. Just want the better card overall.

Thought?

390X is undoubtedly the more powerful card.

May depend on your PSU also. The GTX 970 can get by with a good 500 watt PSU, the 390X should have at least 650 to 700 watt PSU.

I would shot the middle and go with the 390 non x, still faster than the 970 and about the same price maybe cheaper

I have a 850 gold rated psu right now, so power shouldn't be an issue.
Have a haf-x case so I assume I should be fairly okay for the heat of a 390x?

I'm with spentshells. The 390 (non X) just offers much better value, given that it is only about 5% slower. Either way, I think the AMD cards in this price range are better than their nVidia counterparts on a performance per dollar basis.
