GTX 970 weaker than GTX 780?

Hi!

I need a GPU for video editing (no gaming) for up to around 300 bucks. Therefore I am interested in the GTX 780 and 970, which both cost roughly the same. I am a complete GPU noob, so I hope for your expertise.

I found the GTX 780 to have 2304 CUDA Cores, while the new GTX 970 only has 1664 CUDA cores.

In terms of FLOPS the 780 also seems to be faster:

GTX 780: 4500 GFLOPS (SP), 190 GFLOPS (DP)
GTX 970: 3500 GFLOPS (SP), 150 GFLOPS (DP)

So, even though the cards cost the same the newer one is worse in terms of performance? Is this correct? 😵

Simply looking at arbitrary specs do not give a true representation of a graphics cards performance, the only way to determine that is by looking at ACTUAL performance reviews.

The GTX970 is considerably better.

No, the GTX 970 is better than the 780 in all applications and reaches 780 Ti level performance. The numbers here are misleading as both cards use different architectures. Therefore, a 1664 core 970 outperforms the 2304 core 780.

Definitely get the 970 over the 780.

970 is on Maxwell. They have really poor double precision floating point performance, worse than Kepler in fact. That's why they got the GFLOPS down. I believe you'd be looking at the Single precisions and the Shading performance for the GPU for gaming. AND IT ROCKSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for your answer, but that is my exact problem. There seem to be only benchmarks for gaming out there. As far as my research goes, those benchmark tell nothing about CUDA oder OpenCL performance. There are no Adobe benchmark charts. I really would like to play 0 games.

There are SOME reviews in regards to professional performance.

A GTX780 or GTX780ti would be a little better in professional work than a GTX970 or GTX980.

I will try and find some info. But they won't be available so soon after launch.

I know Tom's is planning to do a more comprehensive follow up of the GTX970 and GTX980 review.
