Ever since I purchased my gtx 980 earlier this year I've noticing (in my opinion) poor performance for my set up. In most games I was suffering some sort of frame drop sometimes hitting as low as 40-50 on ultra. BF4 for example will range from 50-80 on ultra 1080p 100% resolution with the gpu usage rarely going above 70%. CPU usage averages at around 50% throughout. GPU temps are fine staying below 70 degrees with cpu temps around the 40s. Any ideas? thanks.

Solution
nice. 80-130 sounds a lot more realistic. hopefully then there is no actual hardware problem and it was only v-sync messing with your frames :)

EVGA NEX750B, how would I monitor this and what do I need to look for? I normally use MSI afterburner

hook DMM device on 12vrail for proper measurement or the software hwinfo64 can be somewhat fine if your mb sensors work properly. you can also check the " gpu power load" on msi afterburner. start hwinfo64 before starting a game, then keep it running. hwinfo will save min max values for 12v rail and you can chgeck with alt-tabbing or after closing the game.

also i've seen several issues nowdays where the fx8350 were downclocking while gaming for some reason. so please also look out for the cpu clock speeds when the issue happens

The GPU power load is min 39 and max 86

you play with vsync "on" ? please download hwinfo64 and check the voltages. 39%power load is really low while gaming with vsync off. it can be either your PSU malfunctioning or the cpu downclocking, causing a huge gpu bottleneck. also check cpu clock speeds real time when the fps drop/gpu usage drops happen

does hwinfo64 monitor cpu clock speeds also? v sync is off in game but I am using a G sync monitor with G sync on of course.

to do proper testing switch off g-sync. yes hwinfo also monitor cpuclock speeds. there must be a huge bottleneck in your PC somewhere. I mean 40fps on BF4 maxed is definitely not normal, because i get like 90-130fps. on my 980

Clock speeds look fine and the +12v values are min 11.737 and max 11.943 with g sync on will test without gsync now

As I went to change the G sync setting in control panel I noticed that for some reason V-sync is also turned on, it may have defaulted back with my last driver update, turned it off and left g-sync on noticing much better performance in BF4 between about 80-130 fps now, going to try a few more games now.
