Hi, my graphics card was recently making an odd noise due to a wire lodged behind it, and after taking it out to move the wire, my card began to cause shutdowns due to me putting it back in wrong. ( I assume this as it now performs as before while under load in situations where my pc crashed instantly ) And there is now a high pitched noise coming from the gpu after rectifying both of these situations. Please note that the noise in question wasn't present prior to these issues, and it is inaudible when my pc is performing basic tasks.

My specs are as follows;
1 x 4th Generation Intel Core™ i5 4590 3.30GHz Socket LGA1150
EVGA 500B 500W 80+ BRONZE PC Power Supply
Zotac NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 4GB AMP! Edition

that would appear to be coil whine, and there is not much you can do, it may be that your power supply is over stressed and is putting out power waves which is causing a resonance in your coils. 500 watts for a GTX 980 is rather low, I am pretty sure they want around 600 watts minimum.

Is there any chance this could damage my system? Should I upgrade my PSU?

I wasn't aware coil whine could become a sudden issue- and i'd also like to add that the whine is louder in a benchmark such as catzilla, especially the initial loading screen, than older games such as just cause, although it is not louder by a significant margin.

A better PSU is a really good idea, as that power supply is most likely overworked, but coil whine can be caused by all sorts of things (some cards are just infamous). a new PSU is a need for safety, but it might not help much or at all. I would try contacting the manufacture and see what they have to say, some companies will do things about coil whine. it is normal for a GPU to whine sometimes when you are at loading screens but not all the time. this could have been triggered by that improper cable insert partially damaging a choke or VRAM, but as above there are so many possibilities.

this morning I Oc'd the card, then put it back to normal, and the whine appears to have disappeared, although it's still present when loading games up, and menus. I will still pursue a PSU with a greater wattag however.
