As the title implies, I have two simple questions: Is the new 980 able to cope with the demands of 4K gaming & video rendering at close to 60 fps. In addition, is it a worthy upgrade from a GTX 680? Before that I had a 550 Ti, and the performance jump I'd seen was four-fold. i bought a 1080p screen shortly after. Or am I better off getting another 680 in SLI?

Thanks & all advice will be taken in good faith.

Yes for some games, no for some others. On BF4, you'd get ~50 FPS on High, while on Crysis 3, you'd get ~30 FPS on High. You'd need to get to medium-high settings for 60 FPS.

Also, 980 is more suited for higher resolutions than 680, even in SLI. I'd expect similar results, besides the fact that in future you can add another 980 and go all pro, but you certainly wouldn't add a third 680, so yes the upgrade from a single 680 is worth it.

Agreed with above but just keep in mind even though the 980 with 4GB Vram is capable, more so sli, the point of 4k will depend on your monitor. Monitors are just too small <30" to notice much from 1080p, maybe for a TV @ 70"+ would you notice more depending how close you're sitting.

I have two 680 OC's. One of them runs battlefield at 60 fps at 1080p, so I only use one and lent my brother the other.

I'll let you know how they handle 4K once I get a 4K screen (I should be getting it around Christmas)
