GTX 980 or Fury X?

Solution
New generation Nividia graphics cards coming out May. New AMD coming out in June. With the new standard DX12, AMD may rule. If you can wait, wait. Otherwise the best board now is the 980ti.

If you read the article you posted it state that the laptop/notebook version of Polaris will be mid year.
There is nothing on Desktop cards yet.

None of the talk I have seen limits a Polaris launch to mobile only this year .

Indeed this makes no sense at all since mobile and desktop chips are identical silicon. The difference is always that mobile chips are run at lower voltages and clock speeds to hit lower power targets.
I think you are confusing the 2017 launch of Polaris with HBM [ vega], with the June 2016 launch of Polaris with GDDR5

Yes, Nvidia's silence on asynchronous computing for DX12 does not bode well for its upcoming 1080 series. With this and the Zen, apparently 8 cores with multithreading and the same instructions per clock as the Broadwell, 2016 may be the year of AMD's comback!
