Hello,
I use an i7 5820k with lots of ram; is it better to wait for a better pascal gpu eg. 1080Ti and go for a 980 now or shall i skip that and get a 1080? playing at 1080p@60hz
sorry for my bad english

gtx980 is bad price/performance and should not get under any circumstance unless you can get extremely cheap (and then you should still consider 1070 instead)
for 1080p there is no reason to get or wait for 1080Ti
970 or 1070 is perfect fine
could wait for 1080, but would be overkill, and you should atleast wait for partner cards, the "Founders Edition" is overpriced crazy, initial launch purchase is always higher

I could get a gtx 980 for 420Euros. my problem is I dont have a graphics card right now and I want to play games.

should I get my hands on that card and re-sell it later on (when the 1080 is not as expensive anymore?).
I am looking forward to battlefield1 so I will upgrade to 1080 (or better) anyways.

I mean the founders edition is about 800euros and there will be versions with better cooling later on? so waiting for them to come out for acceptable price?

i cant in good conscience recommend buying a 980 now, specially only for 1080p 60hz
even if you did get it now and resold it later you would prob get a huge loss on it because of the 1080/1070

either you get a cheap card now, used or retail,
in a lower end model like 950, or an r9 380x/gtx960 and endure the quality for now until your true purchase
or you get a 970, and keep for a good while until gtx1080 have settled comfortably on teh market so prices are reasonable

but in noway do i think a 980 would be worth it, unless you could get it much much cheaper than 400 euros, since you can get a new 970 for 300€, much better price/performance specially at 1080p

im almost about to scream go for it!
and still i cant help to be cautious when a deal sounds almost too good, i always feel like there is some caveat hidden somewhere 😉
an overclocked 980ti (which is pretty standard) performs about teh same as 1080 reference in anything below 4k, difference is 1080 thermal are so bad it wont be possible to overclcok at all without heavily modified cooling/partner boards
which would make a 290€ 980ti great value for money.. which is why im feeling cautious, just almost seem too good to be true that something isnt iffy, tho sometimes such great deals do happen

I am waiting for a GTX 1080 partner card myself. The lowest priced GTX 980 on Newegg (usually pretty good pricing and no tax for me), is $394.

If you have looked at any of the benchmark tests performed, the GTX 1080 is about 79% better performance than the GTX 980, and partner cards will start at $599. This seems on par as it is $200 more than the cheapest GTX 1080 at the moment.

However, the GTX 1070 is about 33% better performance than the GTX 980, and partner cards will start at $379. So we are looking at a 33% better card for $20 cheaper... I cannot believe anyone who values money would purchase a GTX 980 at this time.

Even the cheapest GTX 970 would be a waste of money as the cheapest is $289, and the $379 GTX 1070 has 55% better performance. So performance vs money is far better on the 1070. Purchasing any GTX 9XX is pretty much wasting money at this time. Do not think you are going to be able to get even half of that money back if you intend to purchase a GTX 9XX card and want to resell it when the 1070 is in good saturation (maybe a month).

The only card I can recommend (from NVidia) at this time is the GTX 960. And that is with the caveat that you just cannot spend more than $200 on a video card ever. Because if you can just wait a few weeks (even using on-board graphics, or the cheapest card to turn on your monitor, you will have much better options for your money.

Even if the $379 was just out of budget for a GTX 1080; you would be better suited to save $5-$10 a week for the next month and wait for the GTX 980 prices to plummet.

Oh and you can expect partner cards to follow pretty quickly. NVidia has already pre-sold their entire stock of "Founder Edition" cards. There is very little incentive for them to hold back on the partners.

Just my opinion.

i got a gtx960 for 190 Euros now
you forget the the gtx 1080 costs 789 Euros thats about 880 dollars ......prices arent as dirt cheap in europe
I'll get a partner card with a bette monitor later on so I think I made the right choice as for now

as for the 980Ti scam I know more about it the next week ... guy told me he already sent it but yea - trust-issues
