GTX 980 or GTX970 SLI?

Hello all, I was wondering if i should go with one gtx 980
(http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NH2D5DC/?tag=pcpapi-20)
and then buy a second 980 in a few months or two gtx 970s for SLI (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125684)
I would like to get maximum fps on ultra settings for a 144 Hz monitor

**Update**: I'm also planning on buying a 3D kit for my monitor some time in the near future, which GPU Setup would perform the best (My budget can only support two Gtx 970s or one 980 at this time)

Going the route of getting 1 980 and then maybe a second later on is a better option. 1 980 will push over 100fps at 1080p in nearly every game currently out even with AA turned on. You might find that you don't even need a second, and save yourself some money!

I haven't tried overclocking before but would it still be worth it to get the first card over the second? (for gaming)

i would get the gtx 970 sli's if you dont plan on upgrading in the forseeable future. they will outperform the single 980 but if you want to get a 980 right now, you could get another in the future if you wanted to. Sorry my english is bad D:

I would go sli 970. I run that and it just shreds

I've personally always went with single most powerful GPU but with the huge price difference from 980 to 970 you have to give the x70 series props for basically being a performance per dollar king only being replaced by a newer x70 series generation. SLI 970 + 1
