Hi all,
i am selling my R9 280 because i want more horsepower in my gaming build, at first I wanted to buy a GTX 970 because usually, nvidia is a bit more powerfull than amd, but recently i had the possibility to afford a GTX 980 and boom, the first DX12 benchmarks comes out and the nvidia cards comes out destroyed by the AMD improvement.
Now i ask you: is worth getting the 980 over the 390X? i know it's only the first dx12 game, but i am worried i make the wrong choise over the time... For now i am gaming at 1080p but in near future i could switch up to a 1440p panel or even a 2160p panel.
(forgive me if i wrote something in the wrong way, i'm not english)

To be honest If your going for the 980, you might as well save up another 150$/€ to get the TI, as the value compared to the 980GTX is quite a bit higher, as far as I'm aware the 980 GTX is the worst value in the 9xx series.

But that's just my opinion.

yeah i know but my original target was the 970, i saved up more and now i can afford a 980, for the ti i have to add 150 and for me it's out of budget unfortunately.

I would go with R9 but games won't start using DX 12 until mid-late next year. And who knows how those games will use DX 12 or how well nvidia will implement DX 12 support in their upcoming cards. Either card will support DX 12 now though, its just a matter of what advanced DX 12 features they will support to make games prettier.

But the benchmark (ashes of singularity) showed that the nvidia cards have lost some performance instead of gain them, when the amd cards almost doubled the score... I hope it's only because they're out from so little ammount of time and nvidia need to adjust the drivers or some other things because if it's not the case, nvidia is in troubles

Yes but AMD has been designing their cards for Mantle, an API similar to DX 12 but was never adopted as well because, well, it didn't play nice with nvidia. Since DX 12 uses Mantle like features AMD cards are seeing a large boost in performance. You can't really trust just one benchmark. It'll be up to you to decide, do you think the game market will move in AMDs favor, or will nvidia have a comeback in the near future?

Instead of nvidia probably it is AMD that is in trouble? I mean in general AMD card like Fury X should rival 980ti in current games (thst's mean DX11 games and older) but in AoS 980ti was significantly ahead of Fury X in DX11 when they supposed to be head to head in the first place. Remember not all games going to adopt DX12 in the future because low level API going to complicated matters on developer end. Few triple A probably going to adopt DX12 but others probably going to stick with DX11 instead. Also as long as it is driver related nvidia probably going to catch upcto AMD in the future. Nvidia doesn't need low level access to catch up with AMD Mantle performance.

Yes but I think the main issue with the Fury was the lack of VRAM. They sacrificed quanitity for speed and games are not designed that way. Mantle is still around, and I think DX 12 will become main stream, just look at how hard Microsoft is pushing it. So I think nvidia needs to start designing their hardware for it. Which I'm sure they will. Plus with HBM 2 coming not long behind the Furies I feel AMD is about to refresh all their GPUs for Mantle and DX 12. It'll be up to the gamer to decide, do I want DX 11 games, or DX 12.

Nvidia already did. Hence DX12 feature level 12_1 are maxwell v2 exclusive right now. About Mantle battlefield hardline most likely the last mantle title out there. Initially AMD want Mantle to exist along side DirectX/OpenGL/Vulcan but they change the plan.

Gamer most likely want every game to adopt DX12 but ultimately it is up to developer if they have the proper mean to support DX12 or just stick with dx11. With dx11 mist of the gpu portion are handled by gpu maker drivers. But with dx12 they were given the access to optimize stuff for themselves. Now imagine Ubisoft. They already made mess even with dx11. So now give more stuff for them to handle. Unless they spend more resource DX12 probably even more ugly than DX11 for them

I think since Microsoft is pushing the new windows and features as hard as they are they will push directx12 also. Sure a lot of indie games will use DX 10/11 but I'll put my money on the AAA titles using DX 12 by late next year or the year after. I don't really play Ubisoft games lol so I haven't experienced their issues.

Fable legend was supposed to be first triple dx12 title launching by the end of this year....along with original gears of war pc version which first come out as dx9 title. Both will be published by MS as part of their push for DX12. To bad Forza will not get PC version despite it is first actual game being demoed using DX12 during MS unveil of DX12.

Right now i just want to see how things will go from here. There is a lot of hype with DX12 (and low level API in general). That's normal because that's also the case with previous version of DX. We only going to get clearer picture once games actually use the API.

Lol I wonder if the OP has found the help he was looking for here, sort of became a discussion about DX 12 and it's future between the two us renz496. Over all though I think AMD has a temporary lead on nvidia due to AMD drivers being designed for low level API, but once nvidia fixes their drivers over the next year nvidia will probably come out back on top. Unless AMD can make serious headway with HBM or new GCN core.
