Hello,

Does anyone know if my msi big bang x-power with i7 920 have any issues with gtx 980 sli or if anyone is running a similar setup and has encountered problems? I've seen the term bottleneck coined on some websites and some say it does some say it doesn't. (plus i'm not too familar with the definition of the term)

My cpu is @ 4ghz if that helps and i'm running windows 7 sorry i'm abit vauge I'm not used to posting on forums. ha

What resolution he was hoping to play at was never really addressed, but if we're looking at multi-monitor set-ups as I'd expect from someone doing dual 980's, you wont get the same overall performance from a 920. Yes, real world performance is almost always different from benchmarks and opinions. My friend upgraded from a 920 a year ago, and I know from experience. Even if you overclock it, it would be about 20% behind a current gen i5 at stock speeds.

Don't get me wrong. The i7 920 is still a very capable processor, but it's dated. It will hold back most modern cards in SLI/Crossfire, especially at higher resolutions
i7 920??? With 2x 980 sli??? You have to be kidding me.Im not sure if this cpu can handle sli 660.. Bottleneck is when the cpu or gpu are holding back like i3 3th gen cpu will go on full usage with gtx 780 ti and the 780 ti will barely use 40% of its power And you my friend are suffering hard with this first gen i7 and those new 980s.You will need a new cpu and maybe ram. What is your ram?

Don't listen to people that don't actually have the hardware you are talking about.

I have SLi 980s pushing surround, mine is also OC'd @ 4ghz and i can run BF4 in Ultra surround 100+ fps.

Im using a GA-X58A-UD3R.

Sure u can squeeze some more fps out but is it really worth it just to play a game. Will the extra fps be worth the €£¥₩.

If you want to upgrade and future proof yourself, by all means. My 920 has served me well.

Anyone want to post some real numbers for this question or just blast the idea? An opinion is simply a guess/theoretical estimation. Let's see some numbers.

I'm looking to get a GTX 980 TI and pair it with my Core i7 950 Bloomfield OC'd to 4.0 Ghz, so I can play at 1440p.

I had a GTX 970 and it gave me the same results as other people with later processors in Metro LL Redux, Crysis 3, and FC4.

Sorry to bring up old thread lol
But Yes do not listen to those people, a 920 will still perform very well with those cards, however you may see some frame stuttering because your minimum frame rate will sometimes drop, (minimum frame rates will be the hugest performance gain with a newer cpu) but it likely wont be enough to really bother you. I would say go for it, and if it bothers you enough buy a new platform. That way you arnt spending money you dont need to. Or can wait for 1150, 2011, or 1151 prices to drop a bit further first!

Take it from someone who just went from a 940 to a 4790k
If you upgrade you wont see a huge increase in avg fps (though still a good boost) but the frame latency and min fps will see a big boost and overall smoothness

How bout a I7 920 @ 3.5 with a standard 980 GTX?
I play Rust at 2560x1440 and 1920x1080 (Depending on eye candy)

I've never seen my cpu at over 35% utilization in task manager with a 670gtx.

I should benefit nicely ?

Holy shit you gave me a heart attack , you don't even know nothing about the i7

I got i7-920 at 4 GHz with 12 gb 2k screen
Annnnd
Two gtx 680 in sli and never seen it bottleneck the cards. Neverr

Bf4 cpu 60%usage
Gpu 99% usage on both
cards
60-120 fps matters what you doing

Gta 5. Cpu 60-80. Gpu 99 percent 66 fps

Crysis 3 was the only game I seen my cpu hit a 100 sometime but the gpu still pushed 99 percent 50-70

Fry cry 4 cpu 40 gpu 99

Don't say things if you don't even know the hardware and saying that i7-920 couldn't run two 660. Lol

Just to touch on what a bottleneck in regards to component performance actually is. Briefly.

Say for instance you have a game that makes use of two threads of processing power, and no more than that.

i7-920 @ 3.4ghz vs i5-4460 turbo'd to 3.4ghz

In a not so well threaded application the i5 would exceed the performance values of the older i7, due to it's Instructions Per Clock cycle, or rather it's performance per individual core. In this instance you could for sake of argument get a minimum of 50fps on say a GTX 970 with the i5. Whereas you'd get a minimum of 35fps with the i7 using the same card. Just because the 8 thread processor isn't using all of it's resources, doesn't mean the resources it is utilizing aren't holding back other branches of your hardware during any given instruction.

Can you still game with the i7-920 and subsequent first gen i-series processors with modern cards, and have an enjoyable/acceptable experience? Definitely. However the question was, realistically in regards to whether or not there was a bottleneck present in his set-up. And there will always be a bottleneck in any system, so the answer is both obvious and moot lol

Well put Sammy.
I play a game called Rust and I occasionally alt/tab to task manager to cpu utilization and it's usually at 35%

Is there a program/app that will display the cpu utilization in game in like an overlay to get a better feel for what's happening in intense graphical situations?
