PC Specs:
Intel i7-4770k (not sure if OC’d see at bottom)
MSI GTX 980
Corsair Vengeance 16gb RAM (2x8)
Asus Maximus VII Hero z97 Motherboard
Windows 8.1
Corsair 750w PSU
1080p 144hz Asus Monitor
Graphics Card: MSI GTX 980 driver version 355.82
Programs used:
MSI Afterburner 4.1.1 - Everything maxed; 8xAA Fullscreen, Tessellation set to Extreme.
Unigine Heaven 4.0
GPU-Z
Speeds according to GPU-Z:
Default Clock: 1190mhz
GPU Clock: 1380mhz
Default Memory: 1753mhz
Memory Clock:1753mhz
Default Boost: 1291mhz
Clock Boost: 1481mhz
Stock Heaven Benchmark results:
FPS avg: 67.3
FPS min: 27.6
FPS max: 142.7
Score: 1695
For over clocking the ONLY two things increased was the power limit to 115, and the core clock to +190.
With those two increases, Heaven Benchmark gave me:
FPS avg: 72.2
FPS min: 31.7
FPS max: 150.8
Score:1819
I had the core clock up to +200 and it passed the benchmark, however after letting it run for about ~10mins Heaven crashed.
I restarted computer and brought it down to +190 and let Heaven run for ~45mins with no crashing, no artifacts, etc.
I then proceeded to play The Witcher 3 for roughly an hour and noticed I had a steady increase of about ~5fps! During The Witcher 3 my max GPU temps were 65-66c.
However, my power output monitored by MSI Afterburner did show 117 max, even though I had the slider set to 115. I made sure to set the limiter in Afterburner to GPU temp (80c max) though instead of power.
**Should I increase the power higher to maybe 120? Since it did end up reaching 117.
I haven’t messed with the memory clock for the time being as I don’t really seem to need anymore fps at the time being and this took about 2-3 hours of adjusting just the core clock by +10 every time!
Any suggestions? I know this is a little overclock, but I’m new to over clocking and so far happy with the +5fps I’ve received. I’m going to do some more gaming tonight on Witcher 3 and will let you know if I encounter any crashes or problems with an extended period of play (2-3hrs).
Also, for games that don’t need the extra FPS at all, such as Insurgency where I already get 150fps+ should I run at stock speeds instead of the OC speeds? Does it stress the GPU changing back and forth the speeds? I was thinking about ONLY utilization the overclock speeds when I need them, such as Witcher 3, Crysis 3, etc.
One final question off topic… When I bought this computer (about one week ago) I was told the CPU was not overclocked, even though it came with a H100i cooler. Yet, when I open the task manager processor page, under “Speed” it shows 4.55ghz. Yet, to the right where it says “Maximum speed” it shows 3.50ghz.
My CPU is in fact over clocked to 4.55ghz, correct? The core voltage is 1.276v. The max temp I have seen it get is 71c.
I just want to make sure everything is in safe ranges and good to go for gaming!
Any suggestions, safety concerns, etc. please feel free to tell me!
I’ll report back with more gaming later tonight/tomorrow.
Thank you
