GTX 980 TI with 500W PSU System?

Hello, sorry if this has been asked, I didn't see it anywhere in the forum. I have a Mini-ITX Build using the EVGA Hadron Air case with 500W built in PSU. The CPU is Intel Core i7 4970K at factory settings, the GPU I've used is EVGA 970 SSC+, factory settings. I still qualify for the EVGA 90 day Step Up program, and I am thinking about trading up to a GTX 980 TI while I still can. I know that the recommended minimum PSU is 600W, but I've heard that this is typically exaggerated since some PSUs tend to be very inefficient. I game at 1080P (PC connected to my HDTV), so I know that to some extent GTX 980 TI is overkill, but lately I find myself turning down some settings to get games to run smoothly (GTA V and Witcher 3) and I'd rather play everything maxed out, even if it is a very small difference. Has anyone done a similar build using this graphics card, and if so, are there any problems that I should anticipate? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated, forgive me if my terminology is incorrect, I successfully built this PC myself, but I still consider myself very much a noob when it comes to builds.

If you don't overclock it and it is a highly rated 500w power supply I believe it will work. If you overclock the CPU and GPU then you will be cutting it very close and I would recommend you get at least a 650w.

With that said there are always a ton of variables. For example my 4790k runs with all cores boosting to 4.4ghz with only 1.1 volts. At stock settings it was pulling 1.25 volts! Lowering it to 1.1 volts dropped the total wattage by a decent amount. That same thing can happen with a GPU as well.

Don't do it, get a minimum of a 650w-700w psu. The gpu itself pulls 400watts, which leaves you at mos 100 watts(more than likely around 70-80 watts) That is in no way powerful enough to run a cpu mobo cooler hdd and fans. You never want to skimp out on a psu because it can end up frying your entire build. Just make sure you get a good tier psu

Thats not true, the whole system draws about 400 at load, the gpu only about 200 - 250

and the cpu would never draw over 150 watts not overclocked

Thank you all very much for the responses, I spoke with EVGA regarding the possible step up, and they didn't seem to think there would be an issue with this PSU/GPU combination. I've been entered in the queue, so I think I will have a few more weeks to mull it over, but I really appreciate all the input!
