GTX 980 too much for G5400?

My neighbor has a Pentium Gold G5400 3.7 GHz and was going to buy a GTX 1050 Ti. But I have a MSI GTX 980 Gamer I'd be willing to sell him for the same price. So, two questions:
1) Is the G5400 going to be a bottleneck for the GTX 980?
2) is the Antec 500W Earthwatts big enough for the GTX 980?
(444W for the +12v rails, if you can't read the label)

He says he may upgrade the CPU in the future, but hard telling when that will be.

Solution
I know that this question is already answered, but I just wanted to add my two cents...

I have no hands-on experience with the Pentium Gold G5400. However my Pentium G4560 is able to keep up with my GTX 1060 6GB in highly optimized games, such as Overwatch. In highly CPU dependent games, such as Fallout 4, the G4560 is bottlenecked even by my GTX 1050 Ti; 50-60% GPU utilization due to a CPU bottleneck.

I like R_1's input, and agree what the i3-8100 would be a nice future supplement to the GTX 980. I'd even go one step further and would suggest waiting until the near future's i3-9100 (not yet announced but anticipated within the next three months). My highly optimistic hope is that it'll be upgraded by Intel from 4 core to 6 core...

Thanks for the reply. The PSU only has 1 x 6+2 pin and 1X 6 pin PCIe. The GTX 980 has 2 x 8-pin headers. Will it work with only 6 pins in the 2nd header?

Another question... What about a RX-580 instead if the GTX 980 is too much?

your friends instincts are right the 1050ti will balance well with the g5400.BUT if he is to upgrade the CPU anytime soon spending on a better GPU (1070 or the 980) will pay off when the CPU is replaced with something with more power. the GPU will be hindered but if in 6 months a new CPU is on the menu it would be worth it, IMHO. the 8100 which has 4 actual cores would perform than the g5400 with a faster GPU and will balance nicely with either the rx580 or the gtx 980

I do not know first hand if it will work like that but if you have the card and the PC it would not hurt anything to try it, too little power and it just does not work.

Thanks for the personal experience feedback, rcald2000. That is encouraging since the GTX 1060 and GTX 980 are closely matched performance-wise. At least from the video benchmark reviews Ive seen. It would seem from that then, that the occasional CPU bottleneck with the GTX 980 would be acceptable over the no-bottleneck GTX 1050 Ti considering he would be paying about the same for either one. And higher frame-rates would be obtainable in those games that are highly GPU-oriented.

It would be bottlenecked to an extent, but would still give him the best possible experience that his cpu can handle.

I would certainly take the 980 over the 1050 ti.

In titles where CPU power is less important, the 980 will be a lot faster than the 1050 ti
