Hey guys I'm finishing up my pc build right now and I needed some advice on gpu's. My current built specs: i5 4690k, Asus Maximus VI Hero, Fractal Design Arc Midi and 750 W Evga gold certified psu the rest doesn't matter. So I have narrowed down my choices to a single gtx 980 that I would later watercool or one 970 right now and another in a year(watercooling those remains to be seen). I am going to be using my hdtv for about a year than I'm switching to a 120hz to 144hz monitor. This will be primarily for gaming and I intend to play bf4 and the next Battlefield game after Hardline. I don't see sli 980's as an option given my income.

Solution
Ok here is a logical solution for you m8. I would recommend you getting a 850w or higher first and foremost. Second, if youre getting a 120hz/144hz I would assume its a 1080p res. Therefore, you should definitely go with a 970 now and upgrade to another one later. If you're playing to buy a monitor that is 1440p res or higher, then go for the 980.

yeah not upgrading the psu considering the 970 has a tdp of 145w which I assume can be translated to 200w and since the i5 4690k is an 88w cpu I'm not in the least bit worried. I got a gold certified psu because I knew in awhile it would be at 80-90% use and it wouldn't be an issue, but aside from that do you think it's worth watercooling because I only would have 480mm of radiator area and I'm worried it would be loud and perform worse than on air.

I mean on the safe side running more wattage is more efficient and when the psu gets old and rusty your component would be at risks and also safer to overclock it without running into problems. And youre planning to custom water cooled that means more power. One long radiator with 4 120mm static fans would do you good. It would not be worst than air cool bc there would be less heat inside your case. When air cool you also have to put room temperature into consideration.

true, but I do want it quiet would you think it would be

You just need to get high end quiet fans. I recommend corsair. I have a closed loop 280L cpu liquid cooler. The thing runs like a jet. LOOOL. Then again I have them both running 100 percent 24 7. If youre doing major overclocking expect a bit of noise.
