Hey guys I have a difficult decision to make.

I found a gtx 980 for $200 on craigslist. It is the reference design and the guy said he got +204 oc on core and +303 on the memory.

My other option is a RX 480 AIB, most likely the Sapphire Nitro.

What do you think. Is the 980 too good to pass up?

thanks

Certainly too good to pass up, the RX 480 performs similar to the 970, the 980 is a much better pick if your PSU can handle it.

The 980 is faster as is in most current titles. However the RX 480 performs better in DX12 which would be newer games, as well there are reports of overclocks to the RX 480 that get it even further ahead.

The truth is you can't go wrong with either choice performance wise (no the 980 is not "much better"). Personally I would rather pay $200 for a new card vs a used one.

Well then, similar performance overall, generally better DX 12 performance for the 480, $50 price difference and you are getting a new card with a warranty vs a used card that you have to trust he didn't overclock it way more and run it 24x7 like that.

Gotta be careful with the claims about DirectX 12 performance. At this point, we only have two or three AMD Gaming Evolved titles and one poorly coded Nvidia title. Overall DirectX performance is inconclusive at this point. Much of what we are seeing may very well be vendor specific optimizations.

What we can positively say is that AMD cards have better Async Compute performance than Nvidia Maxwell cards (like the GTX 980). Async Compute is only one small piece of DirectX 12. So we cannot extrapolate from there into the entire universe of DirectX 12, parts of which AMD cards can't do at all but Nvidia cards can.

It says right in the OP that its used, no warranty.

If you can get a 980 NEW for $200 definitely go for that, however he is saying used, off of craigslist
