Hello , I have purchased a MSI R9 390 , and i am impressed by it however there are a few things that irritate me with it such as the AMD drivers and also the fps stutters due to poor optimisation for AMD cards and other things etc, the stutters really annoy me as i want a constant 60 fps

i bought it for £270 and my friend has offered to buy it for £200 , i was wondering should i sell it and buy a gtx 980 ti

I play on a 1080p display so is the extra power really worth it
thanks in advance

I'm pretty pro-Nvidia these days and the 980Ti is an awesome card. That being said the 390 should be a great card for 1080p gaming.

I'm assuming the 390 gives you 60 FPS in everything you play at 1080p so you wouldn't see any framerate benefit by switching to a 980Ti if you have a 60Hz monitor. The main difference you could actually see is the Nvidia Gameworks features and faster driver updates.

Only you can decide if the problems you have with AMD are worth the extra $400 or so it would cost to upgrade. For me they would not be. That's not to say that the 980Ti isn't a better GPU. It definitely is. It's just that the 390 you already have should be plenty for 1080p right now.

If it were me I would wait at least until the next...

the amd card i have currently is more powerful than a gtx 970 therefore it isnt worth downgrading

its barely more powerful and the drivers and additional software on team green make up for the performance difference. the GTX 980 is horrible for the budget as it is like 150 bucks more then a 970 for maybe 5-10% performance increase, you are left with either getting a 980ti or waiting for pascal

If it were me I would wait at least until the next generation of GPUs to upgrade from a 390. That being said, I have been on Nvidia cards for the last year so I don't know what kinds of problems AMD is experiencing right now.

Thanks , when is pascal coming out and also how much will it cost?

if its more overkill than a 980 ti there is no point as im only playing 1080p

thanks , my r9 390 is good however little things like 40 fps in cities in fallout due to poor optimisation annoys me , also i get like 40 fps in certain areas in gta, however normally 60 and i want a constant 60 fps.

The point of waiting for Pascal is that the GTX 1700 (or whatever they call the card that replaces the GTX 970) will likely be close to a 980Ti in performance but cost the same as a 970.

Just look at the last generation of Nvidia GPUs. The 780Ti launched at $699. In the next generation the GTX 970 came out with almost the same performance for $330. The point is that high end tech moves down to the midrange price point as time goes on.

Sure you could sell your 390 and go buy a $650 980Ti right now and have a great card. The alternative is that you could keep using your 390 that is already great for 1080p until Pascal comes out and probably get very close to the same level of performance as a 980Ti for $300 less out of your pocket.

I cant thank you enough for you help , thats what im going to do , the r9 390 isnt awful and is a good card and will last me for the mean time until the pascal cards come out

No problem! As someone who has played a ton of Fallout 4, I can tell you that it's not all your GPU's fault. I run 2 GTX 970s in SLI which is pretty much equivalent to a single 980Ti.

I am playing at 1440p so it requires more graphics power than you playing at 1080p but I also see problems with all settings maxed when I am in cities. I would get dips to around 40 FPS.

I ended up letting Nvidia's GeForce experience software pick the optimal settings for me. It turned shadow distance down to medium and lowered the grass detail fade distance a little bit. Those two changes made an extreme difference for me. I never see my FPS counter dip below 60 even in the cities anymore.

All other settings are still maxed out and I didn't notice any difference in the visuals after making this change. The detail fade distance is still far enough out that I don't notice it while playing the game.

I have read that AMD users should also turn down the God Ray effect because AMD cards aren't as good at handling tessellation.

yeah thanks man , its a good game but not a demanding one , not sure if its my sort of game but none the less its a great game
